There is a high speed whine coming at 40 mph (like clockwork) that ceases when the accelerator isn't in. Car sometimes smells very overheated after short trips, though the gauges look fine. Car is V6, wondering if it might be differential?

Possible bearing in one of the drive pulleys. I have changed numerous alternators for this noise. Take the belt off and start the car. If the noise goes away you know it will be pulley related and not transmission related. If noise goes away, spin all pulleys by hand to determine the defective/noisy one
Could be some internal carb problems. Especially if the carb is original, or if it is a rebuilt off the shelf. The internal parts can get old and stop working, such as the accelerator pump.
A whistling noise can be generated by an alternator at high RPM's and indicates a slip ring brush problem or a diode failing . It resembles a frequency whistle.. IT may also be from a leaking gasket and a partially blocked exhaust system from a failed cat converter and at speed and power, the exhaust gas is forced out the hole
The most reliable and tried and true method is to check the transmission oil. Check it for... 1. Correct level 2. Right colour: a nice light red. (or somtimes yellow) not brown 3. Smell, it should have a not unpleasant smell, if it smells 'bad', it is starting to break down and will attack the friction material on clutch packs and brake bands. 4. Remove the transmission oil pan and check it for flecks of friction material, metal filings and pieces of rubber. If any of these things are present, you have, or will soon have a transmission failure. The whine could be the transmission oil pump, the gear set is known to to come incontact with the pump body causing whining noises and creating metal filings which cause the transmission valves to stick..
The smell comes from an overheated oil. Since you didn't say where's the problem i'm guessing that the engine is ok since it can rev high so it's the gearbox: check the oil level in it.
