Question about 1998 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Caravan. Fluid level is fine. It hesitates to take off until the rpm's come up a little. Once it engages there is no trouble until I stop and start off again. I was about to pull it to have it rebuilt when it suddenly started working fine. Forward and reverse. Worked perfectly for a day and a half then returned to the same ol stuff. That makes me think that it is something in all the electrical garbage causing it and that it doesn't really need rebuilding. Any thoughts?

This sounds like a weak pump, this all depends on how the pump is working it may have had that little extra power for a while and then back to bad. these caravan tranys are junk, the problems with these trany date way back, the trany will soon blow up and then you will spend more money , you will need a case for it,

My 92 dodge caravan won't go in any forward gear but park, reverse and neutral warm fine

If engine RPM goes up when you try to go forward but vehicle won't move the forward gears is not engaging in transmission. Could be caused by several things. Check transmission fluid both level and condition mostly condition. Get a white paper towel whip dipstick on paper towel and look for any gray in fluid if transmission fluid is gray you have metal shavings in fluid. Most likely need a new or rebuilt transmission.

The brakes went completly to the floor. I replaced the brake master cylinder. When I bleed the brakes, very little brake fluid comes out and it is still going to the floor.

The brake lines still have air in them that is why you are getting very little fluid out. Pump the brakes until they are stiff then open the bleeder screw on the caliper once the pedal goes to the floor close the screw and repeat the process until you get a solid flow of fluid. Start at one wheel and work your way around until all four wheels do this. As you are releasing fluid remember to check your master cylinder and to keep the fluid level right in it since you are releasing fluid through the bleeder screw, if fluid gets low in the master cylinder you will have to start all over again.

My transmission is not engaging correctly. Once engaged in drive it shifts fine. To get it to engage i must rev engine until about2500 rpms and it engages

Check your transmission fluid level. When the engine is not running the fluid is not being pushed into the torque converter so check the fluid level with the engine is running, from a safety point of view have a friend sit in the driver's seat with a foot on the brake with the transmission in park or neutral. If the level is low, extra fluid can be added via the transmission dipstick tube ( DO NOT confuse this with the dipstick for engine oil!). If the problem persists it could be that you have sheared the oil pump shaft within the transmission. What ever the cause there is little that can be done by way of DIY and a consultation with an auto transmission centre would be the best next point of call

I have a 1997 Cadillac Catera that is having shifting problems. It slips between first and second gear when I accelerate hard. The light on the dash has come on. It also chatters when in first and second...

It may help to change the transmission fluid and the filter. I'd definitely baby the tranny until you can figure out the problem.

Smell the transmission fluid for burnt smell and discoloration, it is a sign of trouble.

You may want to start shopping around for transmission shops.

Good luck!
