Question about 2005 Nissan Altima

Transmission Issue. I have a 2005 Altima SE-R, 3.5L, auto trany. The transmission jerks, sometimes quite hard, while downshifting between 2nd and 1st usually when coming off the highway onto an off ramp or coming to a red light.... could the solenoid valves or transmission mounts cause this, the problem doesn't happen all the time but its starting to get annoying... any need is appreciated. thanks

I have been having the exact same problems with my 2005 altima se-r. Changed transmission fluid, seems to help but its not the root of the problem. I have been told it may be the variable timing gear or timing chain or something like that I don't know but I will keep this thread up to date with anything I find.

    unfortunately the transmission required replacement

the value system was most likely the main issue but after opening the trany up it was not in the best shape either... therefore I just replaced the whole transmission ( i didn't want to replace the solenoid valve then have the trany go a month later.)

This can be caused by a number of things, like a dirty transmission filter, sticky solenoid valve, or worn out transmission fluid. I would recommend that you change the fluid and filter as this should resolve the issue. Seafoam makes a transmission treatment that will not harm your transmission, is compatible with all fluid types, and resolves issues such as the one that you are experiencing. I would recommend that you use a can of it when you have your fluid and filter changed. Most people never change their transmission's fluid, and this is a major mistake, it would be the just like not changing your engine oil, causing premature damage. Transmissions do not require that you change the fluid as often as the engine oil, but nevertheless it is a fluid and does break down after extended periods of use.

That being the case then I would have the solenoid checked out. The transmission in the Altima is reliable and usually defect free, so it has got to be something minor.

When was last transmission fluid & filter change? Should be done every 30k/3years - I'd start there.

First thing ... pull the dipstick and check the oil. It should be bright pink or red, if it's brown or black and smells bad your oil has never been changed. Drain as much as you can, measure how much came out and replace it with synthetic compatible oil. Start the car and let is run for a few minutes and shift the gears a few times ... then take it for about a 10 mile ride to circulate the oil, stop and go now and then so it will shift through all the gears. You could also add about half a quart of Lucas Transmission Fix.

Either the fluid is low or you have a clogged trany filter or are starting to loose your transmition. If it is just low on fliud you will ruin your trany if you keep driving it with this condition.Check your fluid level with the engine running and if it is low fill it to the full line and test drive.
