Question about 2000 Volvo S40

Our 2000 S40 has only 84,000 miles but the dealer said we shoul have the timing belt replaced anyway because the car is 11 years old.

The Volvo S40 dealer says it supposed to be changed at 105000 - I'm just wondering if just because it's 11 years old, it needs changing since the mileage is still pretty low?

Volvo is an automotive name long associated with safety and dependable durability, but to attain the longevity potential that the vehicle was engineered to achieve, attention must be given to regular maintenance and the replacement of parts such as the Volvo timing belt/timing chain. It is a good ideal to replace the Volvo timing belt/timing chain right around the 60,000-mile mark, though if you typically drive in more demanding driving situations or environments, you may want to consider changing your Volvo timing belt/timing chain a bit sooner than that.

The role of your Volvo timing belt/timing chain is to keep your valves functioning at the right timing sequence, hence the name, which allows the right proportions of air and fuel to enter the engine, and permits the exhaust to escape. Without the Volvo timing belt/timing chain serving its role in permitting the air and fuel to come together for the combustion process, you vehicle is not going far.

Volvo technician recommended interval is 96000 miles. You also replace the tensioner and the idler pulley at this time.

Hope this helps.

Factory recommendation is 80,xxx to 100,xxx miles, so it would be a good idea, could save you a large repair if the belt would happen to brake.

Do it at 60,000 miles, it is cheaper than a damaged engine-Volvo had different recommendations:
All models - 1999MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner every 80,000 miles or 8 years.
1,6/1,8/2,0 - 2000-01MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
90,000 miles/8 years.
186,000 miles/16 years.
1,9T/2,0T - 2000MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
66,000 miles/6 years.
138,000 miles/12 years.
210,000 miles/18 years.
2,0T - 2001MY: Replacement of timing belt and tensioner at the following intervals:
90,000 miles/8 years.
186,000 miles/16 years.
All models - 2002MY : Replacement of timing belt and tensioner every 96,000 miles or 8 years.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.

It is not a problem, yet... Two of my coworkers have had serious problems with their cars, not fords, due to a timing belt failure. I have a ford focus, 2004, with about 36,000 miles. Should I, as a...

It is 7 years old or more, but not nearly the recommended
80,000 or so miles for a new belt.

You do the water pump because your in there anyway,
and it is quite an extensive job.

You will be having it done at a repair shop & only one
with experience on timing belts.

Your call. I would wait another year, then do the belt

It will be an expensive repair

How many years or miles should a timing belt be changed on a 2000 V8 Tundra ?

Replace the timing belt at 90,000 miles or 10 years. Considering it is already 11 years old, replace it now. Warning: This is an interference engine. If the belt breaks you will have serious internal engine damage. The water pump is also driven by the cam belt so it is advisable to replace it at the same time you replace the cam belt in order to save labor cost later on when the pump fails. The pump will not last 180,000 miles so replace it now.

I have a 2005 Honda Civic EX Special Edition with 88K. At how many miles should I replace the timing belt?

i recommend replacing a timing belt at 90.000 miles your dealer is most likely to tell you the same thing. you really do not want it to break while driving it.depending on the motor you have,if it has O clearance on the valves. i'm not sure what size your motor is. most honda cars have O clearance on the cam shaft. that means in laymans terms, if the belt breaks while the vehicles moving, the valves will be crushed. that's a whole lot of money. if you bought your car new your handbook should tell you at what mileage what certain services your due for. i know there are 90.000 mile services and also 100.000 mile service. suggest you check with your local honda dealer just to be sure. thank you for choosing fixya.com we're here to assist you anyway we can!

for the3.3 v6 single over head cam or ( SOHC ) which is what your vehicle should have. And ( 60,000) miles for 3.0 v6 (SOHC ) but this is for 1995-98

What service should be done on a 2000 new beetle that has 20,000 miles? If a timing belt fails will it total an engine as in a honda?

yes, it is an interference engine, so if the timing belt fails it blows the engine, but 20K is very early to worry about that. at that mileage, there shouldnt be too much to worry about other then maybe some fluids.

I only have 45K on my 99 Acura TL. I am planning a cross country trip through desert. Should I have timing belt replaced? Car is 11 years old, and manual suggest replacement at 8 years.

i think it could last, factory says every 105,000 miles even though the car is 11 years old it hasn't been driven for all those years, remember on average you put 10-15,000 miles on a car yearly, so your car is missing like 85,000 miles on it which is like the car wasnt being driven for 8 of those years

2002 XG350 - Do I need new timing and drive belts?

timing belt and most drive belts are good for 70,000miles, i think the mechanic trying to take you for a ride, as for the drive belts inspect them if there is any cracking ware marks etc replace them but seriously if they look like new which they should with only that many miles would not need replacing.
