SOURCE: 97 nissan maxima switch doesnt work on 1,2,3 but

problem is usually the resistor, but switch may be going bad too. The resistor is next to the blower motor, above the passenger's feet. You may have to take the glove box out to get to it. See picture below. Also, please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6234839-doesn_t_heater_or_air_conditioner_blow for additional diagnostic info. Same on my 2004 Vue. Pry up shift panel, use putty knifes, slot screew driver, then pry up outer panel (with power window switches). remove screws holding radio, climate control panel (I believe there were 4 screws). gently lift this panel up and push gently toward windshield to unlatch. Don't lift higher than is necessary to acess 4 way flasher switch as climate control cables shouldn't be pulled hard so as do damage to climate control panel. The catches broke on my 4 way switch so I used Goop (from Walmart, Lowes etc.) to glue it in switch recptical. After glue dries, latch panel, screw panel in place and snap widow switch and shif panels in place.

i have been having that same exact problem with my 2002 grand prix for over a year now, and when my ac is on the lower setting the it doesnt work plus the headlights and lights on my dash go out. On Max everything works. i changed the blower resistor(about $35), still doesnt work. i changed all relays and fuses related to the ac, still doesnt work. i changed out the actual ac control switch in the dash, still doesnt work. i have changed everything but the blower motor and have asked every mechanic and auto parts retailer i come across and no one knows the answer. The best answer i got is that it is probably a wiring problem like a short somewhere.

Works great on high only doesnt work on any other speed

If it is manual climate control.
You have a bad blower motor resistor. To replace it remove the lower dash panel cover below the glove box and it will mount in the heater housing with 2 screws. It will have a 4 wire connector with the wire colors being OG/BK,LG/WH, YE/RD, BK
If it is electronic climate control then you would have to replace the blower speed controller which is also located in the same place.

if you are sure that your heater core is not restricted. then try to recalibrate the climate control panel. if your a/c system is not working then DO NOT ATTEMPT THE RECALIBRATION it will make your lights on climate control panel flash codes forever.
to reclaibrate the climate control panel just have the engine running. turn the mode to vent, the temp to cold, the blower on high, then press and hold the rear wiper wash and wiper buttons at the same time until the panel lights up then wait about 2 minutes for it to run completly when completed. turn off ignition and then restart the engine try to se if you have heat again. if it doesntwork post the codes it gives you after the calibration test.

Call your local GMC Dealer and see if they have the climate control panel in stock. What happens is the circuit board on the back of the panel shorts out. The panel comes as an assembly and is very easy to replace. Don't go with a wrecking yard piece. I made that mistake once and it didn't work either. I got one from the Chevy dealer and it worked perfectly.
