I have a Toyota Surf / 4runner 3ltr turbo diesel that is turning over but not starting. The glow plugs arn't glowing and the injector pump isn't pumping fuel through, however there is power to the injector pump. Fuses seem all ok. New batteries. All the wireing looks good. Had it to the auto electrician and he cant find a fault. Was starting with no probs one day then not at all the next. Could it be an ECU problem?

My vehicle a TOYOTA D4D 2.5 cc diesel facing severe restart problems. That is my vehicle is stooped for a tea break or traffic lights after about hours drive. Opening the bonnet , I manually press the fuel pump till it becomes hard to press . The car starts . This why my doubt on a faulty fuel pump unit with injector et all . Must say before sending the vehicle to TOYOTA authorized service center there were never any disturbing issues in my vehicle .

You don't need to take either the turbo or the fuellines of to replace the glowplugs. I do not believe you.

Injectors could be blocked but i would go with an injector pump or fuel pump.

check the ecu of your , it may control your plugs,
or check also your spill valve in the injection pump and the timing control valve also in the injection pump.

Glowing 20 seconds for every start

I feel it is likely to be the injectors squirting the the diesel instead of atomising it. You could try a bottle of Injector cleaner in the tank. There is one just for Toyotas

This is a good review of the products

I have a 1990 toyota surf it was leaking diesel from the fuel pump. We put a duel battery in and went to start the car and the car starts idelsup to 3000 rpm then stalls the black smoke comes out of

you can check the glow plugs.disconnect the negatif from batterie.
remove the wire thats connect all glow plugs.then turn one by one,
the glow plug out.remember where you took them out.you got on ,
one end a pin and the other side treat, treat is possitif pin is negatif.
take a solid wire from and connect that whit a small gripper on the,
nut from the glow plug.now the treat from glow plug put that on possitif batterie en the wire on the negatif from batterie, the plug will start to glow from top off the pin downwarts if its a good one.less good one start to glow in the middle off the pin and then one is not working will not glow ,
be carrefull these can burn very hot,so only do this a few seconds.
diesel needs somewhere between 400 or 500 degrees to ignite.

Toyota hilux 3ltr diesel,i put new glow plugs in about 3 weeks ago & it fixed the starting problem going fine.now it just started not starting when it is cold checked wiring has power to glow plugs...

Double check your fuel filter and replace as necessary. Also replace your coolant temp sensor. I would also pull out each glow plug and bench test with heavy cables and make sure they do glow red. It very well could be a couple of the glow plugs have failed due to quality. Let me know what you find.

Surf 1KZ-TE Diesel wont fire

Typically, the glow plug light not coming on indicates that you have some bad plugs or poor connection. You need to replace the plugs and check the wire connections. It is interesting how picky diesels are when they aren't warm.
Hope this helps.

My 93 hilux surf turbo diesel has started to run a bit rough, not too bad but i have noticed it, i recently had the glow plugs and cold start relay done, but this has had no effect. also uses more fuel....

You may want to add some diesel fuel conditioner.

This is most likely from dirty injector nozzles.

You could also try some automatic transmission fluid in your fuel (about 1/4 quart or so)

That sometimes works.

It may also help if you change your fuel filter regularly.

You may also want to do a compression test on your engine to make sure your engine is in good shape.

There are lots of variables, but I would try injector cleaner first.

(TOYOTA SURF 1990 TURBO DIESEL) No diesel coming out of fuel pump

If it has glow plugs or an intake heater you will need to disable the circuit. Then you can use a small amount of ether to spray into the air cleaner.!!! If you spray too much and/or Dont disable the circuits you can damage the motor!!! When you spray the ether, if the engine starts and stalls then its not getting fuel. This could be related to the fuel pump, injection pump, the fuel system loosing its prime(fuel line leak), fuel shut-off valve or solenoid. If it doesn't start then it could be related to your timing, valves or maybe compression.
