Question about 1990 Mazda MX-5

1 Answer

Overheating - I have recently (last Friday) purchased a MX5 eonos (1990). Today when I was driving over a speed bump I heard a clunk from the rear. I then noticed that my charge light came on then after about a mile I noticed steam coming from the engine compartment. Does this model have an electric water pump? I also noticed that the battery was not secured could this have any anything to do with the charge light coming on? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

My car started clunking in the rear near the tire, especially when I turn left

Check your top shock absorber and/or strut mounts, they may have been hammered by the many bumps and stripped out the mounting hardware on top just an eighth of an inch which will cause super loud bangs as that side wobbles up and down and hits into the Body Metal. These can get dangerous if left loose at all, my old boss said his Taurus would change lanes by itself at 120 Km/hr in the rain!

Violent clunking when truck starts moving. checked obd codes nothing showed up. possibly engine mounts or bushings?

It's hard to tell, from your description, as to the extent of the clunking.
If it seems to only and constantly occur whenever in forward motion, bumps or not, then I would first check your rear differential, (if 4x4 then your front differential as well).
Check fluid level(s) and if okay, remove cover and check for worn gears and any metal shavings on the magnet on bottom of housing.

Worn gears can toss your vehicle around, any make stomach turning clunks and other awful noises. I've recently replaced a front differential on a 1994 Dakota. It would make same clunks as you describe and a few times would make my back end seem to 'hop' while driving highway speeds. I would check this quickly.

If it only seems to happen over bumps, then your guess on engine mounts or bushings is probably the best guess.

Rear suspension klunk. just replaced coil springs. clunk heard when hitting bump in road at any speed

if u look under the car u will see metal rods called strut rods, these have rubber bushings at each end, the rubber bushings are the common source of the noise you have

If it's making a clunk noise when hitting bumps, check the mounting plates and bushings that hold the rear end to the frame. GM made these plates out of aluminum and the bolts that go through the plate and the bushings rot out and the rear end slams against the frame.

Clunking noise in the rear of the vehicle is a broad statement. When is the vehicle doing it? Is it all the time or just over bumps? Is it happening only going around curves? Is it a constant bump that speeds up and slows down with the vehicle speed. You would be supprised how many clunking noises can come from the driveline not the suspension. It could be anything from a bushing to your rear differential getting ready to grenade.
