I have a 1998 Town and Country LX. Recently I had a mechanic check my car because it would not start; originally I thought it would be a battery problem. When I put the key into the ignition all the light would lit up in the upper dashboard but the light for the speedometer. the gas needle and the mileage lights would not lit up. The mechanic concluded that the " alarm system " is locked. I have lost the original remote along with the riginal key many yaers ago; I had copies already made before I lost the original. It used to be that if I left the key in the ignition for a while the lights in the lower dashboard would come on and then the car would start but now is not even doing that. I went to chrysler and bought a remote and have follwoed the instriction but it does not seem to be working the owners manual says the following To arm the system. Withe the key removed from the ignition the system will arm when you use one of the following methods: 1. with the driver or passenger door open, push the power lock button on that door 2. Press the LOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter 3. lock the driver door , passenger door, or liftgate using the key in the key cylinder After the last door is closed , or if all the doors are closed the system will arm itself in about 16 seconds. During that time the vehicle Theft Alarm light will flash ( I have not seen any flasing lights). If it remains lit steadily, the hood is not secure and the engine compartment will not be protected ( I have checked the hood and securely closed) If it does not iluminate the system is not arming.
