No brake fluid at rear wheels when pedal is pressed.pedal is solid and the fluid level is full.

Hello Brent.

Your Chevy has a split diagonal braking system.
This means that one circuit supplys pressure to the right front and left rear and the other the left front and right rear.
So if your front brakes are working that means the master cylinder is OK.
Where are you checking for pressure?
Have you opened the bleeder screws to verify?
The proper way is at the rear bleed screws on the wheel cylinder or caliper (depends if you have rear drum or rear disc brakes)
If that is where you are checking the bleed screws could be plugged up with rust or debris.
Pull them right out and verify no fluid.
To each rear wheel there is a proportioning valve that limits pressure as full pressure would lock the rears first.
Perhaps these valves are not flowing.
If you could provide me with what you have done so far I'll continue to help you solve the problem.

Why won't my rear disc brakes keep a pedal


Sound like you have air in the system. You need too bleed out all the air. Some times it takes a while cashing it around. Start at your right rear brake, have some pump them up and hold down the pedal , then open your pit valve, after each time check your brake fluid. You will probably get air from it tell the Pearson that is helping you to hold the pedal down until you have check everything. Then when you have solid fluid come out then go to the left side and do the same. Once you have completed the task and theirs no more air the brakes should only take 3 pump of the peddle hold them down and then release them and push them down again the brake pedal should hold .

Bleeding brakes on my 1993 Cadillac Eldorado


This takes 2 people master cylinder is full lid back on . have assistant pump brake pedal 3 times then hold down saying "holding" then you loosen bleeder screw on right rear brake slowly air will come out then a little fluid. tighten screw and say pump it up "holding" as fluid in coming out pedal will sink "Keep pressing" repeat util clean fluid appears. check master fluid level now repeat left rear. fluid level right front fluid level left front fluid level once complte you should have a firm pedal.

How do I bleed brakes on a dodge stratus 1998

    For vehicles equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), please refer to the ABS bleeding procedure at the end of this section.
    The purpose of bleeding the brakes is to expel air trapped in the hydraulic system. The system must be bled whenever the pedal feels spongy, indicating that compressible air has entered the system. It must also be bled whenever the system has been opened or repaired. If you are not using a pressure bleeder, you will need a helper for this job.

    WARNING Never reuse brake fluid which has been bled from the brake system.


    MASTER CYLINDER

    See Figure 1
    If the master cylinder is off the vehicle, it can be bench bled.

    1. Secure the master cylinder in a bench vise.
    2. Connect 2 short pieces of brake line to the outlet fittings, bend them until the free end is below the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoirs.
    3. Fill the reservoir with fresh DOT 3 type brake fluid.
    4. Using a wooden dowel, or equivalent, pump the piston slowly several times until no more air bubbles appear in the reservoirs.

    1. Disconnect the 2 short lines, refill the master cylinder and securely install the cylinder cap.
    2. If the master cylinder is on the vehicle, it can still be bled, using a flare nut wrench.
    3. Open the brake lines slightly with the flare nut wrench, while pressure is applied to the brake pedal by a helper inside the vehicle.
    4. Be sure to tighten the line before the brake pedal is released.
    5. Repeat the process with both lines until no air bubbles come out.
    6. Bleed the complete brake system, if necessary.

    If the master cylinder has been thoroughly bled and filled to the proper level upon installation into the vehicle, it is not necessary to bleed the entire hydraulic system.


    PRESSURE BLEEDING

    When bleeding the brakes, air may be trapped in the brake lines or valves far upstream, as much as 10 feet from the bleeder screw. Therefore, it is very important to have a fast flow of a large volume of brake fluid when bleeding the brakes, to make sure all of the air is expelled from the system.
    On Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring convertible and Breeze models, the following wheel sequence should be used to ensure that all the air is removed from the system:


    Left rear wheel Right front wheel Right rear wheel Left front wheel
    On Sebring coupe and Avenger models, the following wheel sequence should be used to ensure that all the air is removed from the system:


    Right rear wheel Left front wheel Left rear wheel Right front wheel

    1. You should use bleeder tank tool C-3496-B or equivalent, with the required adapter for the master cylinder reservoir to pressurize the hydraulic system for bleeding. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's directions for using a pressure bleeder.
    2. Attach a clear plastic hose to the bleeder screw located at the right rear wheel, then place the hose into a clean jar that has enough fresh brake fluid to submerge the end of the hose.
    3. Open the bleeder screw at least one full turn or more to get a steady stream of fluid.
    4. After about 4-8 oz. of fluid has been bled through the brake system and an air-free flow is maintained in the hose and jar, close the bleeder screw.
    5. Repeat the procedure at all the other remaining bleeder screws. Then, check the pedal for travel. If pedal travel is excessive or has not improved, enough fluid has not passed through the system to expel all of the trapped air. Be sure to monitor the fluid level in the pressure bleeder. It must stay at the proper level so air will not be allowed to re-enter the brake system through the master cylinder reservoir.
    6. Once the bleeding procedure is complete, remove the pressure bleeding equipment from the master cylinder.


    MANUAL BLEEDING

    See Figure 2
    Proper manual bleeding of the hydraulic brake system will require the use of an assistant.
    On Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring convertible and Breeze models, the following wheel sequence should be used to ensure that all the air is removed from the system:

    1. Attach a clear plastic hose to the bleeder screw located at the right rear wheel, then place the hose into a clean jar that has enough fresh brake fluid to submerge the end of the hose.
    2. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal 3-4 times, and hold it down before the bleeder screw is opened.
    3. Open the bleeder screw at least one full turn. When the bleeder screw opens, the brake pedal will drop.
    4. Close the bleeder screw. Release the brake pedal only AFTER the bleeder screw is closed.
    5. Repeat the procedure 4 or 5 times at each bleeder screw, then check the pedal for travel. If the pedal travel is not excessive, or has not been improved, enough fluid has not passed through the system to expel all of the trapped air. Make sure to watch the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. It must stay at the proper level so air will not re-enter the brake system.
    6. Test drive the vehicle to be sure the brakes are operating correctly and that the pedal is solid.

    Need to know how to get the air out of the brake lines.


    You will need to bleed the brakes. The easiest way to do this is to have a second person if you don't have a power bleeder.
    You should have the vehicle on a level surface, then starting at the farthest wheel from the master cylinder (right rear) have your helper pump the brakes several times until the pedal is firm. Then have your helper keep constant pressure on the brake pedal while you loosen the bleeder (a small nut with a hole in it located towards the top of the brake backing plate on the rear). If this vehicle has 4 wheel disc brakes the bleeder will be located at the top or highest portion of the caliper. You should check that you have a full master cylinder of Dot 3 brake fluid and make sure the cap is on securely after you have bled each wheel. Running the master cylinder out of fluid will only cause you to have more bleeding.Only crack the bleeder open far enough till you see, feel or hear air come out but make sure to tighten it before you helper reports the pedal is on the floor.
    You will need to be quick. Repeat this on this wheel till you get a solid stream of brake fluid coming out. Then move to the left rear and repeat.
    Once done on the rear you will need to remove the tires from the front to have access to the bleeders on the caliper.Again starting on the left front repeat the procedure then move to the right front.
    By the time you are finished your pedal should be firm and towards the top. If its not you may need to replace the brake pads and shoes and have the rotors turn or replaced. If you have rear drum brakes you should make sure these are properly adjusted up also. This too can cause a spongy pedal.

    Is there a special way to bleed the brake system on a 2001 catera


    1. Place a clean shop cloth beneath the brake master cylinder to prevent brake fluid spills.
    2. With the ignition OFF and the brakes cool, apply the brakes 3-5 times, or until the brake pedal effort increases significantly, in order to deplete the brake booster power reserve.

    Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with DOT-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container. Ensure that the brake master cylinder reservoir remains at least half-full during this bleeding procedure. Add fluid as needed to maintain the proper level. Clean the outside of the reservoir on and around the reservoir cap prior to removing the cap and diaphragm.
    1. Install a proper box-end wrench onto the RIGHT REAR wheel hydraulic circuit bleeder valve.
    2. Install a transparent hose over the end of the bleeder valve.
    3. Submerge the open end of the transparent hose into a transparent container partially filled DOT-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.
    4. Have an assistant slowly depress the brake pedal fully and maintain steady pressure on the pedal.
    5. Loosen the bleeder valve to purge air from the wheel hydraulic circuit.
    6. Tighten the bleeder valve, then have the assistant slowly release the brake pedal.
    7. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat these steps until all air is purged from the same wheel hydraulic circuit.
    8. Repeat this procedure with the LEFT FRONT, then LEFT REAR and finally the RIGHT FRONT.
    9. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the maximum-fill level with DOT-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed brake fluid container.
    10. Slowly depress and release the brake pedal. Observe the feel of the brake pedal.

    Bleeding brake system how?


    BLEED BRAKE SYSTEM

    Make sure one end of the Jeep is raised (starting with the rear end) and secure on jack stands and the wheels on each side have been removed. If you have been working on the brakes, this should already be done.

    Connect a clear rubber tube to the bleeder valve on the right rear brake caliper. Start with this end and side because it is farthest from the master cylinder.Place the tube's other end into a container partially filled with brake fluid.

    Open the bleeder valve on the caliper and have an assistant press on the brake pedal inside the Jeep. Look for a mixture of air and fluid to come out of the valve. Once all the air is purged and the fluid runs cleanly from the valve, close the screw and remove the tube.

    Repeat the process for all four brakes. Move to the left rear next, followed by the right front and the left front. If you need to, reconnect the Jeep's rear wheels and lower the rear end before raising the front end and removing those wheels.

    Check the level of fluid in the master cylinder periodically as you bleed the brakes. If the level drops below the needed fill line, add more fluid. Use fresh fluid, not any that you have bled from the brakes.

    Start the Jeep's engine after bleeding all the brakes and press on the brake pedal. You might need to do this repeatedly to seat new brake pads you just installed. Turn off the engine and hold down on the pedal. Bleed the brakes again if the pedal sink within 15 to 20 seconds.

    How do i bleed the brake system


    First, before you do the bleeding, did you "open" any of the lines? Was there a caliper replaced?

    If no line was opened, you do not need to bleed the brakes.

    If so, please let me know and I will post the bleed procedures for you.

    Why are you thinking about bleeding the brakes? Spongy brake pedal?

    Replaced front brkes how do i bleed them


    are they hard or soft to break at the pedal? or normal? if normal NO if soft/squishy YES if too hard... drain some fluid? or check master break cil.

    Changed break line but still have no pressure in breaks


    to do a complete job. you need to bleed all 4 wheels, starting from Right Rear. Right front. Left Rear. Left Front.
