Question about Lincoln Navigator

I have a 2000 lincoln Navigator that bucks under light load in overdrive. The problem is not the transmission and no codes are present. could this be an ignition coil, and if so, which one?

Hello Mr best wrench.

Certainly could be an ignition coil as it is a common issue.
A small misfire doesn't easily set a code and often a technician will need a scan tool capable of reading the vehicle computer in what Ford calls "mode 6".
This gives live data of each cylinder on a road test.
If it has been a while since the spark plugs were replaced it may be a good place to begin.
Keep in mind that these plugs are difficult to access and proper torquing is essential.
Improper installation can lead to stripped threads very easily on this engine.
Inspecting the boots at the coil for carbon tracks on the inside of the boot often are a clue to misfire.
Also have seen where water intrusion down past the boot and into the spark plug tube causing rust creating misfire as well.
Inspect the tops of the coils for cracks or signs of burn through.
I'd advise also to use Ford original coils as I have had issues with aftermarket suppliers.

There are a few tips for you, I hope it helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.

I have never heard of a coil pack causing a vehicle to "buck" with or without a load. Coil packs more commonly overheat and cause a vehicle to shut down until they cool off or they give out completely. What is it that makes you believe it's not the transmission? Is it new or recently serviced or rebuilt? The problem, to me, sounds like the torque converter or shift solenoid. However, if you believe it to be the coil packs, there is a way to test them with a volt/ohm meter, but I am not sure of the process. A quick search on Google will certainly reveal that process though. Just search for "testing coil packs". Hope this helps in some way.

Is overdrive activated when the light at the end of the gear shift is on or off on a Lincoln navigator 2001

If the "Overdrive Off" indicator is illuminated, this will prevent the torque converter from locking and engaging overdrive. This can be useful when traveling through hilly regions or when heavily loaded to keep the transmission from continuously hunting for the correct gear. When the light is off, the transmission will operate normally, including locking the torque converter and engaging OD. You should normally drive with the light off. If the light is flashing, that's an indication of a transmission diagnostic trouble code being present.

Dear Anonymous,
I am sorry to have to tell you you are most likely to have to take your car to a Lincoln dealer and have your computer replaced, or re-programmed at the least.
This kind of mistake cannot be fixed for free.
God bless your efforts.

Does why does the overdrive light keep blinking on my 2000 four wheel drive lincoln navigator

when the overdrive light is blinking is that you have a transmission code you need a code reader to see what code it is if you don't feel a difference in the performance of the tranny it could be something simple.

Code U3FFF

U codes are communication faults between the different modules present on your vehicle. The PCM has to maintain control via separate modules that monitor and control every aspect of it, from engine and emission control, transmission control, anti-lock, traction control, lighting, hvac, suspension control, etc...To diagnose these codes requires a quality scan tool and a technician who is experienced with these systems.

My overdrive light is blinking

When your overdrive light is blinking it is a tell tale sign that you have a transmission trouble code. You need to have the trouble codes read from the power train control module and we can go from there. Auto Zone will do this for free.

My overdrive light is flashing on and off

The O/D light flashing is an indication of a transmission electrical fault. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the electronic sensors and actuators on the engine and PCM. If it finds a fault on these circuits, it will alert the driver. Since the O/D light is flashing, the fault is specific to the transmission. You'll will need to have the codes checked in the PCM before any repairs are attempted.
