Question about 1996 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

My Battery light is on my 1996 limited Ford explorer and my meter level is closer to the L instead of the middle. I just purchased a new battery and the light is still on so I need to know what the problem is and what I can do to fix it.

More than likely your alternator is going bad. But before buying one have it tested at any good parts store. Advance, Autozone, etc.. does this free on the car.

Ford focus 2005 battery light stays on new alternator , battery only 6 months old

First, a bad battery doesn't turn the light on. Just A bad alternator or ECM. Start the car. put a volt meter on the + and - sides of the battery. If it reads 12 to 15 volts (closer to 15 for a new alternator). The alternator is good. And is charging. The problem is the wiring or the ECM. It can be bypassed to turn the light off. I just did it a week ago. Problem is , I don't have the wiring diagram for your car. Don't get a book from the parts store, it won't tell you. Go to alldata or Mitchell and purchase a manual. It's online and lasts a year. But they give you good electrical schematics...

1996 Ford Econoline charging problem

Is this E-150 econoline?
Engine running, take reading at generator bat terminal, what is it? The basics, take reading across battery terminals, everything off. Take second reading at bat terminals, engine running. The second reading should be higher than the first if charging system is working. Was the charging system checked on the vehicle when the generator was checked out?
There could be a wiring circuit problem? The bat terminal at generator is hot all the time, engine running or off.

Alternator gauge closer to the low side but but will keep running with the battery not connected and head lights on

It sounds like the alternator is working, but have it checked at the parts store. Most places is free to do it. It could just be the sensor to the guage isn't working properly, or the guage itself.

I have residual current draw on 1996 Ford Explorer. I traced it to fuse #25 (Speedometer and Gem System). Which is most likely? Can I (with battery disconnected) disconnect Gem, then reconnect battery...

When checking a draw you have to wait to check till all modules have powered down including Gem module. This can take up to 30 min. Specs are 50 ma draw. To check get you a test light take off the postitive cable, " you can also use a meter", now you have to put the light in series withe the battery and cable. Clamp one side of test light to battery cable the other side to battery post WITH CABLE OFF THE WHOLE TIME. Now if you open doors turn any switches you will have to restart your 30min. then you can check and see if unplugging module, if that fixed problem. what we do is open the doors before, then take a screw driver and close the door latch so that you can get in and out of the car without turning something on

Needs a new battery. The alternator meter reads charge. The battery doesn't seem to have umph... What battery is best and cheapest?

The cheapest battery isent the best to get as the one which sells a lot is good and the ALTERNATOR must charge at 13.5 amps and battery 12volts.
Turn on head lights and start engine if lights brighten up then its charging But if the lights dont go bright then the alternator isent up to standard so get it reconed So check charging before buying a battery. Let me know how you go with it Ron

2003 ford explorer battery light on

Are you sure the alternator isnt "over" charging? if not, you may have a "loose" connection somewhere with the cables, or a malfunction in the dash cluster. Also, are you positive the battery is forsure good?
