I have been getting the code p0740 it says something about the torque converter clutch circuit. it doesn't seem to be going into over drive. dose anyone have any suggestions I can try.


On some cars, there is a TCC solenoid in the transmission which can be replaced by removing the bottom pan. In some cars this solenoid can't be accessed without major disassembly.

P0740 Honda - Transmission Lock-Up Control System Fault Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness is open or shorted
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection

Tech notes
On some Honda vehicles the P0740 code may be set by an overheating torque converter problem which is caused by an insufficient flow to the torque converter release circuit.

P0740 Honda Description
The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.
Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.
When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

Now i dont know a lot about automatics especially modern ones with all this fancy electronics thats used nowdays but i think its a fault with the temperature sensor for the gearbox.But where its located and what it looks like i have no idea it could even be mounted inside the gearbox .Sorry not a very good answer from a mechanic but?? very few of our europeon cars come with auto transmission .Evan when i do know whats wrong i cannot buy the parts for the gearbox as only re-con boxes supplied by the dealer so best advice is to try a specialist in auto box repairs only .PS some of my best students when i used to teach mechanics many moons ago were the girls so no excuses like iam only a girl please

Dashboard message - service engine soon ?? my local service station said it said - torque converter


That is located in the transmission and can be very expensive to repair/replace - Do NOT take to Amco! Did he also tell you the exact electronic code? Uusally, the code will say more than just torque converter.

Have you noticed any hesitation when you are starting to move; in reverse on on a hill - any noticeable slipping?

Possible Causes:
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted

Check your fluids 1st if they are low add fluid, and if they are dirty do a flush and a new filter. This usually will take care of it and save you money. TCCSV is a bit pricey try the cheaper route first. But it is located inside the transmission or on the side of the transmission. I dont recall exactly. Its something I would let a shop do though unless you have high mechanical skills.

Auto transmission will not shift gears


Get diagnostics done and if you will get code P0741 - This trouble code is about damper clutch, which improves fuel economy by matching power transmission effectiveness of automatic transmission Damper clutch consists of control valve and solenoid valve which converts electric signal to hydraulic signal by the TCU signal. Corresponding code will be displayed under following conditions when damper clutch is operated form TCU lock-up output time. -when the difference between engine revolution and input shaft revolution has been below 160 RPM. Torque converter solenoid (TCU) is the last thing you should look at to replace, the cause of its failure might be in a different area like worn seals. Nevertheless it is a serious malfunction of a gearbox as further usage may end in a complete gearbox failure and the only solution you will be left with is to rebuild the gearbox or get a new one. Before you start buying parts you should closlely inspect the inner cover seals for uneven wear or possible damage, short cicuit will be caused by fluid passed onto electric connection,

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Intake manifold bracket upper bolts Clutch release cylinder and move it aside, if equipped Intake manifold bracket lower bolts and remove the bracket Starter from the clutch, manual transmissions only Starter from the torque converter, automatic transmissions only Starter electrical connectors Move the transmission wire harness aside Starter

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter to the engine well Starter electrical connectors Lower intake manifold bracket and install the upper bolts Starter into position. When aligned properly torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Torque the intake manifold bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Properly position the clutch release cylinder, if equipped. Torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). torque converter lock-up solenoids are at the top of the transmission on the OUTSIDE. The two came off with three bolts and the screens on mine were clogged with "lint".
