No compression on cylinder #2 after putting a new (remanufactured) cylinder head and pistons/rings

You did not mention about replacing a piston you said was broken? if you did not there is the cause of you low compression. either way if you did change it out and did not measure the ring end gap and put the right size ring in the hole then it looses compression, if you failed to resurface the cylinder and just put in a set of rings then they wont seat for a while. In addition. length of push rod? was cam follower collapsed? did you change? How about the connecting rod of the piston? the one that was in there more than likely got squashed and isn't coming up to full compression Sounds to me like you need to take the head off again and check out a few more things Sorry!

I have a 79 jeep cj5 with a 304 and im getting alot of white exhaust smoke after the motor warms up rebuilt the carberuter new plugs wires cap rotor and new coil

White smoke is often times the result of "oil burning". What happens is that instead of the oil control rings on the pistons pushing the oil down into the oil pan, these rings over the course of years become pugged up, as a result the oil control rings "fling" the oil onto the spark plugs causing the oil to get partially burned off in the combustion process causing your simptoms There is only so much you can do to stop this. One thing you might try first is go to the automotive store and buy a crankcase cleaning system. What this does is cleans the inside of your engine including the pistons rings and washes all or most of the gunk in the engine into the oil pan. WARNING: excessive gunk in your oil pan can clog your oil pick up tube depriving your engine of oil, this will cause it to seize up leading to your last resort in fixing what might be your problem, rebuilding the engine. Make sure to follow the manufacturers guidelines when using a crankcase cleaning system.

Installed new brake pads on 2000 jeep grand cherokee but experiencing brake drag on left wheel...strong odor of overheating. caliper is free and I suspect the piston seals may be binding on release of the...

Good chance of caliper to piston issues like you describe, the pistons must move freely (freely a relative term). Easiest to replace with rebuilt calipers. You need perfect brakes. Consider replacing rubber lines at the same time, pretty easy during caliper job and DO NOT let M/C run low on fluid during this process.

98 Jeep Cherokee sport 4.0 turns but won't start. i'm stumped

Yes. It is possible the timing chain popped. it is also possible you cracked the block. If there is a Distributor on the vehicle remove the cap and watch the rotor as you crank the motor. If the rotor turns your timing belt should be good or at least attached. If the Rotor doesn't turn when you crank the motor the Timing chain is broken. If the Timing chain appears good do a compression check and see if you have compression on ALL cylinders. If you lost compression on any cylinder you'll need to rebuild the engine. It could be bad rings, a broken Crank shaft or connecting rods. Only way to find out is to remove the oil pan and check them all and if you have to replace the rings you'll need to remove the head to get the pistons out to put new rings on. Get a Haynes repair manual on the vehicle so you have illustrations and directions on how to repair everything.

My 2000 Caravan uses too much oil. Mechanic says the head gasket needs to be replaced. what do you think? the van runs excellent, it has 210,000 miles on it.

If you plan on keeping it, than I wouldn't, with that many miles on it I'm sure your piston rings are pretty worn out too. Replacing the head gasket will decrease your oil use, but it also will increase your compression which might cause more oil to blow-by your piston rings which in turn will make your engine burn more oil too, which you are trying to prevent in the first place. I believe you are better off using that money and putting in a Remanufactured Motor with a Warranty and everything is new or rebuilt.. You might spend a little more now but at least you will have a piece of mind.

Pistons?? i have two that went through to the oil pan........i think that is what it is. Prices please for repair. Even a good estimate.

The average engine replacement is around $500.00 for labor and plus the cost of the rebuilt engine. You do have a 10 year old truck and may be cheaper to find an other cherokee the same year with a good motor and bad body and have a shop do an engine swap. The average rebuilt engine is $19,000 to $23,000 in Ontario Canada, your going to have to call around your area for prices, then you can decide on which way you'll like to get your cherokee running again. Good luck and keep me posted.
