There should be a fill plug on side of trans pan. Fill it until it just starts to run out the fill hole.

2009 Hyundai Sonata automatic transmission fluid changing, How to fill the tranmission, is there a fill plug? OR should i use the

You add fluid in the same pipe the dip stick is in. Remove the dip stick and insert a funnel and add fluid through there. Check it frequently since there is no way to remove fluid easily if you over fill the transmission.

this is a so called "sealed transmission" what does this mean?, there is no dip stick, the fluid level is checked by removing a plug on the tranmission case.

My 1991 Honda Accord does not want to shift out of Park.. when i got in to start it.. it smelled like something was getting hot... then it just would not shift....

I hate to give bad news to such nice people but the low down is you may have already done to much damage.
Lets see if you have any fluid in your transmission.
There is a dip stick located under the hood and on the motor. Like an oil dip stick only this one goes into a long tube. It can be located on the right or left side of the motor.
The next thing you need to do it start the engine. You should put it into neutral but if it will not come out of park then park will have to do. Place the emergency brake on as well. With the car running go pull out the dip stick. To make sure you are pulling the transmission stick out, the fluid will be a redish brown color on the end of the stick. It may be darker if you got it that hot. The car Oil should be nearly clear to black depending on when you last changed the oil, but no redish color and You do Not want this dip stick. Find the other long tubed one.
If the stick shows no fluid on it then we may have found why it got hot.
The next thing you will want to do is add just enough fluid to see it on the stick. The reason why is because you probably burnt up the fluid in it and you are going to need to change all the fluid and replace the filter.
No since in waisting more then you have to.
You will need the long tube type transmission fluid funnel. Walmart would be cheapest butif you don't shop there then any auto parts store will have them.
Ihave used a rolled up piece of note book paper in a pinch but this can get messy.

Automatic transmissions go by pints on the dip stick though the fluid comes in quarts. Unlike the oil which the dip stick goes by quarts and comes in quarts. If the fluid is Not showing on the stick... Turn the motor off and add a Full Quart the first time because when it is that low you are safe to do so.

If there is fluid showing now then see if it will shift out of park and into a gear. (The motor must be running.) If it does shift then you need to shut down the vehicle and go to the next step otherwise>> you will be waisting money on fluid you will be disposing of later.

If it still does not show any fluid then look under the vehicle to see if there is any leaks going onto the ground. If you do not see any leaks then go ahead and add another quart. Stop the engine to add it and restart it motor to check it.
Once there is fluid showing try shifting it again.
If it does have fluid showing on the stick now and it does not shift then you may have burnt up the transmission and a rebuid is in order or a new replacement put in. A 1991 would Not be cost efficent to do this unless you bought a wrecking yard tranny and replaced it yourself.

Ok if it does shift and moves back and forth then we need to go to the next step.
Draining the old fluid and changing the filter.
This will require some ramps to raise the vehicle off the ground if you want to takle this your self. If the car moves now then you may want to put a little more fluid in it and take it to a gas station that does mechanical work or lube place and have them do it. Buy the fluid and filter for your model first. All those mechanics charge extra if they buy the parts.
I hope this helps, The Raz

Hi!!

Take the measuring stick from sleeve, place a funnel into sleeve (two dollars at your favorite auto parts) and add tranny fluid to level. Do not overfill.

Click below if helpful, good luck.

I have a leak in my 97 automatic subaru legacy and need to add some fluid to my transmission just to get it to a shop. It doesn't say in the manual or on any site I've been to where to add it or what kind...

The type best used is "Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid Type-HP or IDEMITSU ATF HP. you add it through the dip stick hole. You may also wish to add a transmission leak oil to swell the gaskets and stop the leak add it the same way if you choose to use it. both of these should be available at your local auto parts store like NAPA.
