Hi, first check for vacuum leaks. If it's running rich, check the fuel pressure regulator diaphram.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r7427423-fix_poor_idle_high_idle_stalling_fuel . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

I have a 1989 Chevy 2500 4x4. I put it in 4 high and it feels like it is only engaging on one side of the front end. I still have some grip up front but the pickup pulls back and forth on the road.

bad locking hub.. pull them and clean them.. if you don't use your 4x4 often, they have a tendency to stick. even the electric hubs get gummed up.

1989 Chevy 1 ton wont start

It is likely the electronic ignition control module. When they go, they just go bad and usually when you are driving.

If it was a smaller vehicle it could also be a timing belt but your's has a heavy duty valve train so no worries there.

Clicking noise in front end when 4x4 is ingaged.

Have the front hubs and CV joints checked, that is where this kind of noise most commonly comes from.
