Question about Nissan Pickup

In no start condition no fuel and no fire then some times it will run fine for a couple of days.distributor is the input signal to ECM that engine is turning over. ECM then controls fuel& fire I need diagnostics to check distributor and maybe the power transistor to coils do have batt voltage to coils swapped relays at relay center no help without further diagnosis best guess is dist or ECM

I did work on a Nissan pathfinder with very similar symptoms. Mass Air Flow sensor was the problem. It also sends a start signal to the ECU. Try checking the connections and cleaning it. Good Luck!!

    Only use Mass Air Flow cleaner to clean the unit. Carburetor cleaner and the like will destroy the sensors.

1999 f150 turns over fine, at times wont run


When it won't start is there spark , does the check engine light come on when you turn the key on ? What's battery voltage at when it won't start , is the charging system working . When it won't start check power an grounds to the PCM/ECM - engine computer , your need a PCM/ECM connecter pin out .

When is the code detected?When the ignition signal in the primary circuit is not sent to Engine Control Module (ECM) during engine cranking or running.

Symptoms- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

P1320 NISSAN Description The ignition signal from the Engine Control Module (ECM) is sent to and amplified by the power transistor. The power transistor turns on and off the ignition coil primary circuit. This on-off operation induces the proper high voltage in the coil secondary circuit
Possible causes - Faulty power transistor unit built into ignition coil
- Ignition primary circuit is open or shorted (circuit to ignition coils)
- Ignition primary circuit poor electrical connection (circuit to ignition coils)
- Faulty ignition system condenser
- Crankshaft position sensor circuit

Even tough the coils may be working OK, the resistance for one or more of the coils is greater or smaller that what the Engine Control Module (ECM) is expecting. Measuring the resistance with the coil out of the vehicle may not show any failures, usually the coil fails under heavy conditions (hard acceleration) or certain temperatures.

The P1320 code means that there is problem with the "Ignition Coil" or the wire to the ignition coil. For some models without individual ignition coils the Ignition Coil is inside the distributor and the distributor need to be replaced to fix the problem.

The fault code P0322 means "Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal"
The P1544 means "Seat Direction Switch Assembly Circuit Open"
The P0121 means "Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem"
when you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself.

1979 chevy van not getting spark.was running fine day before.turns over fine,getting fuel.could it be the module


First thing is what condition are the distributor cap, ignition rotor, and spark plug wires in?

There is the possibility that the ignition coil located in the top of the distributor cap is faulty and first check to see if full battery voltage is even getting to the "Bat" or "Pos" (+) positive side of the ignition coil when the key is in the "Run" position. Then check the secondary resistance to the ignition coil.

The ignition module and the pick-up coil/stator located inside of the distributor is what generates the signal that the ECM (Engine Control Module) uses to time and fire the fuel injectors, as well as the signal to run the fuel pump and the dwell signal timing to fire the ignition coil. A faulty ignition module can cause any one of these systems to malfunction.

That does sound like a malfunction with the ignition module inside of the distributor, and you can remove the ignition module and have it tested for free at most auto part stores. If the ignition module does test out alright then the problem could still be in the pick-up coil/stator, (it can be tested using an ohm meter by dis-connecting the wire connector from the pick-up coil/stator and the ohm reading between the two wires from the pick-up coil/stator should be between 500 and 1500 ohm's, and both of the wires from the pick-up coil/stator should show an open loop or an infinite reading between each wire and ground) and if the pick-up coil/stator is found to be faulty then replace the entire distributor, or the distributor will have to be dis-assembled to install a new pick-up coil/stator.

If you do purchase a new ignition module be sure that it does come with a silicone grease or a die-electric compound because it is a heat sink and the ignition module will burn up without it.

To install the new ignition module first clean out the mounting surface inside of the distributor. Then completely coat the metal contact surface under the ignition module with a thick coat the silicone grease or die-electric compound and do not leave any of the metal contact surface of the ignition module un-coated with the silicone grease or die-electric compound, and be very careful not to over-tighten the ignition module or it will be damaged.

OBD Code 12 - No Distributor Reference Pulse (Diagnostic Test Active) The Engine Control Module-ECM uses the distributor reference pulse to calculate the engine speed. On newer engines, the Crank Shaft Position Sensor performs this function.

Symptoms:
  • When flashing the Check Engine Light to read codes, code 12 will always display first, indicating the diagnostic system is active
  • The engine will not run with a "hard" code 12 set
Common Problems:
  • Chances are you will never need to diagnose a code 12. Rather, the problem would be a crank, no-start condition.
  • If code 12 does not flash, that would indicate a communication problem with the ECM.
  • Code 12 does not show when reading codes with a scan tool. If there is a communication problem, the scan tool will let you know.



OBD Code 46 - Pass-Key II System Error - Circuit out of Frequency Range The ECM receives a signal from the Pass-Key module.   • Faulty Knock sensor
  • Poor connection at Knock sensor

It starts and runs for a while, and then randomly dies and wont start, but starts again after sitting a few hours

Your cold start valve is not opening to assist the firing. It function is to provide extra fuel to ignite the all combustion chambers easily. When the engine doesn't have this extra fuel from the cold start valve, it will take a few times to get it going. The cold start valve is turned on at the time of starting only if the ECM get the signal from coolant temperature sensor saying it is at a preset level. When the sensor is bad, it can give a wrong value so ECM think that temperature is hot so not turning the Cold start valve. Replace this coolant sensor first, then the next thing is to check out the cold start valve.

Crank engine with distributor cap removed, is it turning?
(That is if it has a distributor cap, some newer cars don’t have one)is it turning?
Broken timing belt or chain?

Are you getting power to the + positive side of the coil (small wires) with key on ? Hint; I use a needle pushed into the back of the plug so as not to damage the wiring.
If you have power then wiring from the ignition switch is OK. It usually is.
Hook your test light to the - negative side of the coil (one end on the - terminal and the other end on a ground). You should have power on the - side of the coil with the key on and engine off.
Crank the engine while watching the test light. Get a flashing signal at the test light when cranking?
If so and you have no spark the coil is likely dead.(don’t rely merely on resistance tests for a coil, a weak coil can test ok for resistance but still give no spark.It happens but is unusual. I learned this the hard way!)
No flashing signal?
Check continuity in all primary circuit wiring for opens.
If they are good,
It is time to check the pulse generator in the distributor. (That is if it has a distributor cap, some newer cars don’t have one, if it doesn’t then the ECM or computer sends signal via the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor)
With the engine in non-running condition connect your A/C voltmeter to the pair of wires at the pulse generator and crank the engine. You are looking for an A/C signal that makes 4-6 volts of A/C. Got this? If so the ignition module is dead or has a bad ground. If not (more likely) you have a dead pulse generator in the distributor.
If you have three wires in the distributor signal wire you have a Hall effect sensor. I forget how to test that one. (Chrysler stuff)


If this part of the primary ignition tests ok then check wiring to ECM pinouts for opens.Wiring tests ok.ECM as last resort.
