Question about 1999 Chevrolet Prizm

I have a 1999 Chevrolet Prizm with a manual transmission. As the engine increase in RPMs the speed of the car does not increase.

The clutch plate is worn out or the clutch diaphragm has collapsed. I assume your car pulls off normally. From a standstill, put it in 5th gear and slowly release the clutch. If the clutch is slipping, the engine will continue to run and not stall out as it would in first gear. If this happens you will have to have a clutch replacement.

Advise Trans or engine problem ?


This is more than likely in your transmission, if your engine revved to 4000rpm and your speed did not increase. Is this a manual or automatic transmission. If the vehicle is newer, within the last 10 years, you could probably have the controller for the transmission plugged in and get the codes for the problem.

98 Chevrolet prizm stalls when put into drive. Replaced crank sensor ignition starter alternator and it is still stalling


Most likely the idle air valve or throttle motor is broken or stuck or not receiving signals from the engine ECU to increase the air flow to the intake in response to an increased engine load and therefore maintain the idle speed at the preset value.

If there is not a cable going to the speedometer from the transmission then it has a VSS (Elecdtronic Vehicle speed sensor) attached to the speedometer.

Sounds like you need to replace the clutch if the rpm's increase alot and the speed increases a small amount the clutch is starting to have excess slippage. If you go to Autozone web site and search a bit you should be able to find the needed type of transmission fluid and quanity needed.

Unfortunately yes, the torque converter has gone bad, and it is slipping. Increased rpm is due to the lack of friction in the turbine / torque converter, the equivalent of a burned out clutch in a manual transmission. Burnt smell is due to overworked, overheated transmission fluid. Turning off the engine, and letting the fluid cool down, will improve the situation for a few miles, until temp goes up again.

Normally that would be classic vapor lock. But I don't know how that could happen since fuel injection recirculates so much? I try to think of how gas tank vent valve could do this and also draw a blank. Leaving the fan. It is electric and possibly not working? It is mechanical and have a bad clutch?
