Question about 2003 Ford Expedition

2 Answers

2003 Expedition. Fuel system loses pressure if it sits for a while w/ engine turned off. Symptom: Crank for several seconds (5-10) to build up pressure, re-crank & engine will start immediately. Side effect: radio takes maybe 5 seconds or more to power back up. Is there a typical spot where this model loses pressure on the high (return) side, fill tube, or some diaphragm/check valve component?

Seem to get this problem with the 4 litre jeep engine where you have to crank for a second then twice and it starts on teh thrid crank ,and i havent been able to fathom it out as yet ,but the explorer has a electronic voltage switch on top of the tank thats is operated by the immobilisor ,So what i would do here is to remove the fuel tank and join the two big wires together which effectivly by-passes this switch and i think this may cure your problem .Lower tank on a jack a bit then disconnect the multiplug and the petrol pipes ,join the two wires on this switch which is on top of the sender /pump unit ,pump the fuel out to lighten the load using the fuel pump with two wires to it ,then lift tank back up and reconnect ,good idea to remove the sender unit and check the gauze filter on the end of sender unit whilst you have it out .and check for rust in the bottom of the tank

84 Chevy cleberty after it sits for a day it will not crank unless I put some gas in the Tb thin it cranks and runs fine it has fire and fuel injector is spraying

Check valve inside fuel pump is bad , need new fuel pump . The check valve is suppose to keep pressure in fuel lines . Try turning the ignition on - off a few times ,to build up pressure . The PCM/ECM engine computer energizes the fuel pump relay for two seconds when key is turned on to prime the fuel system .

2003 Ford Expedition is hard to start. I takes two to four turns of the key to get the engine to fire.

Could be fuel pressure loss.
The fuel pump is supposed to hold pressure when the engine stops.
If it falls to zero, you would have to cycle the fuel pump relay a few times to get it back up to start.
I would check the fuel pressure first.

Starts then dies & won't restart

check fuel pressure, should be 40 psi.
try 2 things

spray starting fluid in air intake to see if it will stay running. It's fue then.

Try turning key to on nd wait 5 seconds for system to build pressure and pump to shut off. Turn key off, wait for relay clcik noise or 10 seconds. then turn key to ON again and wait 5 seconds to build pressure again. Then start engine. If it starts better, you have a bad check valve in the fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator on the fuel rail (unlikely).

Vehicle has to crank for several seconds before turning over. Is this a symptom of a fuel pump malfunction?

HI there not all the time it could be clogged fuel filter
Or pressure regulator.
Put first replace fuel filter and see if engine starts normal. OK

good luck

Wont crank on frist try

It would help if you were a little more specific with the year, make, model. etc. but usually with the newer fuel injected cars, excessive cranking means that the check valve on the fuel pump at the fuel tank is leaking. When the car sits the pressurized fuel rail at the engine loses its pressure due to the check valve leaking and you must crank the engine several times to build the pressure back up.

hook up a fuel pressure guage and check it at start up, key on pressure should build and hold , if not check it could be regulator of leaking injector

My 2003 hummer has a ''hard start'' it takes about 6 seconds for the engine to turn over. I did a full tune up on it, wire, plugs etc, but no luck, what do you think?

If you mean that the engine cranks over for 6 seconds before it fires up, that sounds like a fuel situation. You would need to install a fuel pressure gauge and turn the engine off for several minutes and see if pressure drops. The pump has a check valve that keeps the fuel line pressurized until you start the engine again, if that valve is bleeding off pressure it takes longer for the pump to prime the fuel system, hence your long crank. Could also be a regulator or fuel injector bleeding pressure. Good luck!

2003 Expedition hard to start

HI ' sounds like a liking fuel pump check valve ,to test install a fuel pressure tester follow instruction on tester ,turn key on don't crank engine over turn key off and back on again note your fuel pressure should be 38 psi to 48 it should keep 20 psi in system after 10 minutes of just siting replace fuel pump if you loose the pressure

1999 hard starting expedition, with 5.4 engine

fuel pump may be going. try this. turn key on, listen for fuel pump to run for 5 seconds. Turn key off, wait 15 seconds or until you hear relay click inside car. Turn key on again for 5 seconds and ff for 15 seconds. repeat once more. This will pressurize fuel system to 40 psi so injectors have full pressure. If it starts quickly now, you are getting bleed down through the check valve in the fuel pump or the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail.

The fuel pressure check valve in the electric fuel pump has failed, you will have to replace the fuel pump, it is in the gas tank, also replace the filter at the same time or the warranty on the new pump will be voided.
