Question about 1992 GMC Safari

1 Answer

Will not start (electrical) first time did not start for 36 hours, then started fine, drove 300 miles, did not start, 24 hours later started again, drove less than 5 miles, did not start. 24 hours later started again, shop has replaced coil, still will not start. I pulled and had NAPA check distributor ignition module (under and in distributor) - good. this does not seem to be heat related. i cannot afford to keep paying bills over $100, with no results.

Many things could be your problem but i would say your coverter is stopping up, or ECM "computer" need's reset., You can do this yourself by turning the key to on position turn on a/c then disconnect battery cable " POSITIVE" wait 30 sec. turn key off and connect battery back, Good luck hope this helps some but it could really be many different things.

You need to do an OBD2 engine control module fault code test to see if the fault is recorded in the memory of the computer control module. Autozone and others do this testing for free.

You say he removed the fuel pump fuse? Do you mean he changed the fuse? The fuel pump can't work without the fuse. Perhaps the fuse is blowing and causing the engine to stall and not restart. Find the fuel pump relay and swap it with another relay of the same type. Make sure the fuel pump fuse is good. If the engine starts, drive it around close to home until you think it's had time to stall out again. If it down'nt stall this time then the relay is bad and needs to be replaced.

Vehicle was parked and not started for 2 months.

Hi, there will be diodes in the generator that are letting the power from the battery drain away through the parked times when not in use. to prove it charge the battery- then disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, connect 24 hours later and see if the battery as kept it charge, if so - fit new alternator, good luck.
