Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

I have a 98 VW Jetta GLS with manual shifter. The shifter is sloppy. I can move it all around. Sometimes it is a little difficult to get into 5th gear. When putting it into reverse it will sometimes go into 1st gear because the shifter is in the down position. I used to have to push the stick towards the ground and shift into the reverse position. I don't have to do that anymore. I can lift the shifter stick up and it just falls back down. I have removed the boot and to see which piece is broken. I don't know what the piece is called, I don't have a manual. I have tried to find the piece but I have been unsuccessful. I am not sure how difficult it would be to replace or if it would be easier to take to shop to have it done. Please, Help?

Well the Trans may be bad or the linkage. When you press down on the shifter to get it into reverse does it feel funny or just the same as ever? The linkage is first place I would look. Under your air box behind your battery are two linkage rods. Is one loose or broken off? 97 VW Jetta GLS, manual transmission. The speedometer stopped working & the fuel gauge is jumping around.

Hi Ken You seem to have two faults with your vehicle. One will be a speed sensor and the other possibly a bad connection. Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and pin point the problems (which the scan will do) and then sort them out. Regards John

I have a 98 vw jetta gls... the transmission drops into neutral and slams into first gear after coming to a complete stop.... can you help me????

you may have a fluid leak that has left the pan next to empty. check the fluid level, and add if needed. VW need specific tranny fluid. Mobil 1 Dex III will work though.

Problems with gear box

The first thing to check is that your shifter linkage is adjusted correctly and that there are no worn out (sloppy feeling) shifter bushings. If the shifter is OK, then the synchronizers in the trans are worn. You can get the details for the correct way to adjust the linkage from the Bentley manual... Hope this helps...;-)

Finding Thermostat on 98 Jetta GLS

Its to the right of the water pump towards the bottom of the engine.. Follow your lower radiator hose. Make sure to get some G12 coolant from VW before you do it. If you mix the coolants they turn into a gel that will cause you to overheat.
