Question about 1997 Toyota Previa

Open Question

I have a 1997 Toyota Previa LE with the All-Trac system. The rear driveshaft is basically shot. Can I safely remove this shaft and continue to drive while waiting for a shaft to be shipped to me? The shaft must come from Japan, and with all of their problems right now, I have no idea what the ETA of the shaft is.

by slip -yoke for rear drive shaft, I think you describe a spline joint with universal joint yoke attached, I have all drive shafts for an AWD previa. Write jsimm@verizon.net

The compression is the same for all cylinders(150), but when I turned motor over, water came out of #1 cylinder only. Any idea?


Sounds like a head gasket leaking water in from the cooling system. Does it run OK? Any water in the oil on the dipstick and a mayonnaise type film on the oil filler cap?

That previa has a central engine, so all engine work requires you take out driver and or front passenger seat out.

How to replace the drive shaft coupling on a 1995 toyota previa


I replaced my drive shafts on my 96 Previa LE SC, so I know it can be done. If you don't know the difference between the auxiliary drive shaft and the front or rear drive shafts, then you probably want to have someone do it for you. The auxiliary drive shaft coupling replacement is a difficult job. It is covered in manuals available in auto parts stores. $20 for the manual is worth it if you decide to do it yourself.

Do you have too removed the whole drive shaft to replace the d/s coupler


If you mean the shaft that runs the accessories in the front causing a chattering noise, No, you need to loosen the mounts that hold the whole front assembly in place to remove the coupling though.
If you mean the rear driveshaft, then yes, Lift the vehicle, select neutral gear, apply the handbrake and mark the driveshaft at the rear where the driveshaft connects to the differential so it can be re fitted in the same position. Loosen the bolts one by one, releasing the handbrake to turn the driveshaft around to get to the next bolt. Take note of which way around the bolts are as this is important for the strength of the bolts in relation to the sheering action of the driveshaft.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Mark the position of the driveshaft yoke on the axle companion flange so they can be reassembled in the same way to maintain balance.
  3. Remove the flange bolts and disconnect the driveshaft from the axle companion flange.
  4. Allow the rear of the driveshaft to drop down slightly.
  5. Pull the driveshaft and slip yoke rearward until the yoke just clears the transmission extension housing seal. Mark the position of the slip yoke in relation to the transmission output shaft, then remove the driveshaft.
  6. Plug the transmission to prevent fluid leakage. To install:
  7. Lubricate the yoke splines with suitable grease.
  8. Remove the plug from the transmission and inspect the extension housing seal; replace if necessary.
  9. Align the slip yoke and output shaft with the marks made at removal and install the yoke into the transmission extension housing. Be careful not to bottom the slip yoke hard against the transmission seal.
  10. Rotate the axle flange, as necessary, to align the marks made during removal.
  11. Install the driveshaft yoke to the axle flange. Install the bolts and tighten to 71–95 ft. lbs. (95–130 Nm).
  12. Lower the vehicle.

Make sure that engine is not running with a cylinder miss fire, if that ok have your motor mount's check.

sounds like you may have some bad u-joints or differential problems scotch your wheels so it won,t roll put in neutral and climb under grab driveshaft at rear end and at trans see if u-joints are shot if this vehicle has two piece driveshaft check carrier bearing in middle of shaft hope this helps

Continue using Dexron.
