The 2.2 liter does not have a timing belt. It has a timing chain.

The timing chain cover is located behind the crank pulley. It can be removed to inspect/replace the timing chain.

I can give you more details on how to do this if you would like?

Typically a chain will last hundreds of thousands of miles and generally does not need to be replaced as a routine service.

probly about time-specially if its an inteference engine wher valves cud be ruined--while performin inspect water pump--front seal etc to save on labor

97 cavalier will not start

pull the inspection cover and u will see it and have someone turn it over and u will see if it has gone bad but u might have a bad crankshaft sensor

2.7 litre 2000 intrepid coolant leakappears to be getting worse.It trickled now creating puddles.Hard to locate appears to be wher bottom hose attches to block

it could be a bad lower rad hose however it can also be the water pump leaking,these pumps are located behind the timing cover and when they leak the fluid will run down and drip off in this area,the timing cover will have to be removed to inspect the water pump for leaking,a pressure test of the cooling system is the best to find the leak.if the pump is leaking then this is the time to replace the timing belts as the pump sits behind the belts.

Need to know timing marks

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Loosen power steering lock bolts and nuts accordingly and remove tension from power steering (P/S) and/or air conditioning (A/C) compressor drive belt.
3. Remove P/S and/or A/C drive belt.
4. Loosen generator mounting bolts and adjusting bolt.
5. Remove generator bolts.
6. Remove water pump pulley.
7. Remove crankshaft pulley.
8. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
9. Turn crankshaft so that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.
10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate.
Do not move camshaft or crankshaft once timing marks have been correctly positioned.
11. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt.
12. Protect timing belt with a rag.
13. Remove tensioner pulley.
14. Remove timing belt. Mark the direction of timing belt rotation (on the timing belt) for proper reinstallation.

1. Install tensioner pulley. Replace tensioner spring whenever timing belt is replaced.
2. Pull tensioner pulley to its furthest point and tighten lock bolt.
3. Check that timing mark on timing belt pulley is aligned with timing mark on engine.
4. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with mark on seal plate.
If existing timing belt is being reused, install belt in proper rotation direction marked prior to removal.
5. Install timing belt onto timing belt pulley first, then idler pulley, exhaust camshaft pulley, intake camshaft pulley, and tensioner pulley in that order.
6. Check that there is no looseness in belt between idler pulley and exhaust camshaft pulley or between intake and exhaust camshaft pulleys.
7. Loosen tensioner pulley lock bolt and allow tensioner spring to apply tension to timing belt.
Do not add additional tension.
8. Tighten tensioner pulley lock bolt to specified torque.
Tightening torque:28~38 lb-ft (38~51 N·m, 3.9~5.2 kg-m)
9. Rotate crankshaft two full revolutions (clockwise only) and align timing mark on timing belt pulley with timing mark on engine block.
10. Check that "I" mark on intake camshaft pulley and "E" mark on exhaust camshaft pulley are aligned with marks on seal plate.
11. If they are not aligned, remove timing belt and start process from tensioner installation.
12. Measure timing belt deflection by applying moderate pressure midway between camshaft pulleys. If deflection is not correct, repeat from tensioner installation.
Deflection pressure:22 Ib. (98 N, 10 kg)Deflection:0.39~0.50 in. (11~13 mm)
13. Install lower and upper timing belt covers in that order.
Tightening torque:5.8~8.0 Ib-ft (7.9~10.7 N·m, 0.8~1.1 kg-m)
14. Install timing belt guide plate and crankshaft pulley.
Tightening torque:9.0~12.6 lb-ft (12.3~17.2 N·m, 1.3~1.8 kg-m)
15. Install water pump pulley.
Tightening torque:9.0~12.6 lb-ft (12.3~17.2 N·m, 1.3~1.8 kg-m)
16. Install generator belt and adjust the tension.
17. Install P/S and/or A/C drive belt and adjust the tension.
18. Connect negative battery cable.

Never forcefully twist, turn inside out or bend timing belt. Do not allow oil or grease to come in contact with timing belt.
1. Replace timing belt if it is contaminated with oil or grease.
2. Check timing belt for uneven wear, fraying, peeling, cracking and hardening. Replace timing belt as necessary.
3. Bend timing belt into a "U" shape as shown in figure. Distance "A" must be at least 1.0 in (25 mm).
4. Inspect both idler pulley and tensioner pulley for uneven wear and smooth bearing operation.
5. Inspect camshaft pulleys and timing belt pulley for broken teeth or damage.
Replace any component that shows damage, excessive wear, or that appears prone to a possible failure.

I have a 96 cavalier,2.2, I am getting any response out of the motor. it is making a banging rattling noise coming from under the right side of the motor by the belts. Do you think the timing chain is...

maybe the waterpump, getting any response do you mean not getting? do not crank engine any more you will damage engine if it is the timing belt or chain !!!!!!!!! pull front timing cover off and inspect before doing anything else, if you want to save your motor and lots off money.. If you have been cranking over it is possible you did valve damage.

I have a 96 cavalier with abs, please advise me on how to remove the drums, there are no inspection holes. i have tried prying and tapping with a maul. thank you

You can do it a few ways. You can get a small sledge about a three pounder and smack it on each side until it breaks free. I would recommend a puller. They are easy to use and you can rent them from most auto parts stores, it will make your job a lot easier. If all else fails you can use heat. A propane torch can be used to heat up the center portion where the drum is attached (needs to be red hot) and then smack it with a sledge and it should come right off. I would recommend the puller first however.

Once you have the drum off take a look at it. There is usually a spot that is recessed an is about an inch long. This is the inspection plate. You can beat out the plate with a hammer and punch so next time you don't have to pull the drums off.

It varies on different vehicles; however, if it has more than 60,000 miles on it, it should be inspected. There is usually an inspection plate that allows you to look at the belt. You are looking for cracks on the inside of the belt or outside. If anything like that exist, you need to have it replaced, and also the water pump needs to be replaced at the same time since they can cause premature failure of the timing belt. If there isn't an inspection plate for the belt, you will need to take off the cover to get a closer look.

Need help with belt problem on 94 chevy cavalier

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and remove coolant reservoir.
  2. Remove serpentine belt. Refer to Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories / Drive Belt. See: Drive Belt\Service and Repair
  3. Remove two generator bolts.
  4. Remove power steering pump and position aside.
  5. Remove tensioner bolts and tensioner.
  6. Reverse procedure to install, Torquing tensioner bolts to 37 ft. lbs.

You have a timing chain, don't have to change it like you do a belt.

Remove belt tensioner

remove center bolt tensioner, unloads as you loosen then will detach from mounting plate.replacements are available at local parts store.
