Question about 2002 Buick Rendezvous

The electrical systems have all gone crazy. Windows, engine lights, head lights, power locks won't function properly. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it to try and force a reset of the control system. Nothing is working.

    The dome lights stay on while driving even when the switch is set to off.

    All of the doors are shut.

    I unpluged the conection from the back of the lighting control unit, all of the lights turn off, except for the dome lights.

    They do turn off, while parked, after the 10 minute shut off cycle.

    There is a "Astro Start" installed on the car.

    I have that sae problem. the car starts and runs fine, but the dash lights and gages and the radio, just go off and on repeadetly...

I can also be your BCM (Body Control Module), I had mine go and my radio would go off, my windows would not work, ac would turn off, locks would go nuts etc...

90% probability you gave a ground wire issue at your fuse/relay panel. Most of the relays work off the same ground wires and you have relays for a majority of those "gone crazy" items.

Try disconnecting your alternator. Charge the battery but leave the alternator disconnected (remove the electrical plug from the rear of the alternator).

If the battery retains its charge and can start the car (you won't cause any damage by starting the engine with the alternator disconnected) it points towards a defective alternator.

If the rectifier pack - the diodes - in the alternator burn out this can cause a battery to discharge very quickly. Sometimes, quite literally, in a couple of minutes.

If the battery still discharges with the alternator disconnected this points towards a failing battery or a drain somewhere else in the electrical system.

It may be that your door locks and windows don't work for the simple reason there's not enough power to operate them. However, as you say your gauges are dead .. this could possibly point towards a drain in the electrical system, but not necessarily so.

It becomes too easy to replace parts one after the other in the hope that a fault is cured. This is an expensive way of going about things. The best option is to pay a workshop or an auto electrician to diagnose the fault correctly. Diagnose the fault first - an auto electrician will be able to tell you within minutes if it's the battery, the alternator or a drain elsewhere.

2000 navigator relay clicking and windows only work with dome light on when vehicle is shut off the dome lights flash for several seconds the wipers quit working also where do I start?


All these components are controlled by a computerized module. You can try disconnecting/reconnecting the battery as this may reset the module. If no results you will have to have this modules operation checked for any codes/failures with a scan tool to possibly pont you in the right direction

note that you never once said car can be driven? why?
job1, can you do job 1?
battery is going dead
if head lamps are dim its battery going dead, (not dash HEADs?)
notice is did not say battery was bad only discharged.

if engine starts is charge.battery lamp glowing.
i engine is dead, can crank it.
get a jump, call AAATOW
or find a loaned battery that is charged.
buy a battery charger and use it.

also cars can have phantom drains, as you sleep battery goes dead. (ask)

Sounds like battery or battery cable problems to me.
If the battery is bad, you cannot trust ANYTHING the computer is telling you. They tend to set all kinds of codes when the battery has a shorted cell. (including fuel pump circuit and transmission system codes) They get "delirious" from malnutrition. You need to have your charging/starting system thoroughly tested.

Battery won't stay charged but the alternator is working good?


If the alternator is charging properly, then you have a drain on the system that could come from anything eclectically powered, you will need to start by removing the fuse to the radio and/or clock, then connect a test light from the negative post on the battery to the battery cable (negative battery cable disconnected positive connected), if the light comes on, you have a drain and will need to start pulling and replacing fuses one by one to isolate the affected system, if the test light has not gone off while pulling fuses, you may have a drain coming from the alternator or starter and will have to disconnect those.

did you manage to fix this problem as i'm having the same problems. the car had a flat battery so tried jump starting it but no luck, replaced battery but can only get headlights/windscreen wipers/passenger window and hazards to work. car won't start and alot of the interior controls are dead, i've checked fuses (replaced 2)

When the armed Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) senses that the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, it enters its power-up mode. In the power-up mode the alarm system remains armed following a battery failure or disconnect. If the VTSS was armed prior to a battery disconnect or failure, the system will have to be actively or passively disarmed after the battery is reconnected. The alarm can be disarmed by locking the vehicle and turning the drivers door lock to the lock (arm) position. Wait a few minutes then unlock (disarm) the drivers door and the vehicle should start.
If the VTSS has been disabled in the high-line Central Timer Module (CTM), the VTSS feature must be re-enabled using the Chrysler DRB scan tool. The clicking you heard was probably from the CTM located behind the glove box.

    Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait one minute for the backup power supply to be depleted.
