I have a 1999 Ford F-450 Diesel. The truck drives perfectly fine when it's cool, but when it's heated it begins to loose power eventually only going on idle. Do you know what the problem is?

    is it overheating?

  • tomluu Mar 23, 2011

    Hi. No it's not overheating

  • tomluu Mar 23, 2011

No, the check engine light is not on. Also when it gets hot and it won't gas, the truck makes loud clacking noises. The engine doesnt show that it's heating up.

thanks for your help. I have one more question about where the fuel pump relay would be , and what number is the relay in the fuse box under the hood.

  • tomluu Mar 24, 2011

It works! It was the electrical accessory relay. I would not have figured this out if you did'nt mention the other things. You gave me a good foundation to start with. Thanks!

Get the fuel pressure checked. Its low. When the engine is cool, the pump lines are contracted, due to cold and fuel flows properly. But when engine gets hot, the lines gets expended a bit.And this does not holds the fuel pressure. The pressure becomes low.The fuel flow becomes less,A required amount of fuel does not reach the engine and it starts loosing power. ------------ First get the fuel pressure checked at any local car garage. If its low, then replace the fuel pump and fuel filter. The other thing to be checked is cam sensor and crank sensor, A common problem with the (the engine in the Ford diesel trucks) is that the CPS or crank position sensor goes out due to vibration. If the computer isn't getting a signal from the CPS, it won't allow any fuel to flow from the injection pump. Worth a look, the sensor runs about $50.---------- also clean the IAc valve and throttle body with card cleaner. The IAc located on the throttle body.------------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

You didn't say if it was overheating or not but if it is, it sounds like a safety feature keeping you from damaging your engine. Check your fluids and check and see if it is putting out codes, you can go to auto zone and they will do this for free.
Is your check engine light coming on?

sounds like an injector fuel pump. Thats what I'd check first as an injector would throw out some sort of code to make your check engine light come on....I hope this helps you..

This is one of two main problems. There is an erratic connection on your electronic fuel injection line, the computer box connection to earth or on the main plug, or one of the sensors on the engine is starting to play up, as itself within, is connecting erratically, which will eventually break down completely given time.I suggest as a safety measure replace all the three or four sensors on the engine, plus check the airflow meter(If it has one) as it might save you the inconvenience of getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere and the costs incurred in the event of this happening. Most modern day vehicles are designed to start giving some kind of problem after about 100,000 miles or five years (which ever crops up first, and it seems like your model is about to experience this.Just a little reminder that heat is a major cause of electronic breakdown in any application. So therefore contraction and expansion of any working part can mess one around chronically.I hope I have been of help to you. Best of luck.

Car runs perfect then starts missing real bad then stalls

Not unusual for fuel pumps to begin to fail once they are heated up from running. First thing in the morning pump is cool, then as you drive, it heats up and begins to lose pressure. After sitting a 1/2hr-1hr, it may start again and run fine for a short time and start to act up again. Had similar problem and found good fuel pressure when tank and pump cool, but lost pressure once vehicle driven a distance and pump heated up. The hotter the weather, the shorter the distance I could drive. If you can somehow set it up to have fuel pressure checked when it starts to act up, that would certainly help confirm if fuel pressure is the culprit.

The motor works but doesn't have enough power it is a 2000 7.3 diesel and sounds like is working only in four cylinders

Have someone test the injectors, they are to a diesel engine as spark plugs are to a gas engine.

hi,

we had an e-450 bus, same thing but absolutely no working room at all. it has two fuel filters one under the driver off frame and one on top of the engine, try those. if that dont get it then it should go to a diesel mechanic or get a special diesel code reader.

It is most likely fuel heater in bottom of filter housing. Unplug it on backside of housing and reinstall good fuse and see if it quits blowing. If so, updated fuel heater availible through Ford.
