Question about 1998 Chrysler Sebring

3 Answers

My exwife had someone replace the tranny in her 1998 Chrysler Sebring. Now it wont turn over, it sounds like it is bounded up as if something is possibly jammed. I was thinking maybe the torque converter wasn't put in straight and now is jammed when the engined was first cranked over. I talked to the guy who installed it. He said he heard the "click" from the torque converter when he installed it on the tranny. He says it is on right. I can turn the engine by using a breaker bar on the crankshaft. But it is like it is jammed when you turn the key. Also the junkyard she bought it from swears that it is a good tranny. The owner pulled it out himself and he said it wasn't frozen or bounded at all. I'm pulling it out of the car right now. Any one have any ideas in what I should look for or even try? I'd appreciate any help or insight.

Unbolt the torque converter bolts that go to the flywheel, or flexplate. You can do this without removing the transmission. Then see if it will crank over. (The starter motor turns the flexplate that is bolted to the end of the crankshaft, thus turning over the engine. The outer part of the flex plate bolts to the torque converter. Those bolts you need to remove. Remove the dust sheild on the bottom of the trans, and then one torque converter bolt, turn the crank, then another, and so on...)

I reconnected the starter last night and the tranny wires to see what might happen. But right now I can't seem to get the starter to work. I have both wires on the starter connected and battery is fully charged. Also I should add that the engine is extremely hard to turn by using a breaker bar and then only turns counter clockwise. But I will try to do what you suggested before I tear out the tranny. I really appreciate your insight and anything else you might add. I'm just so beside myself what is going on with it. Should have been a cut and dry replacement.

Probably the starter gear is binding on the flywheel after the reinsatlation. If your turning it over with a wrench then that leads me to the starter.

Thanks. That would be great if that is what the problem is. I have it half way diassembled to pull it out. But I guess I'll put it all back together and see what happens.

Once you get it back in, remove the dust cover on the bottom of the sheild and look in with a flashlight, have someone try and turn the car on with the key and watch the starter to see if it is engaging the flywheel.

Hopefully all it is is the starter, that would be a better ending. You did say it wasn't turning over to begin with, and some cars are hard to turn with a breaker bar than others, if you pull the spark plugs it will turn over much easier for you.

Trying to put a transmission into 1996 town and country van get transmission bolted into place and motor and transmission will not turn over something bound up could it be the torque converter or is it...

Must install converter into tranny first. Then bolt torque converter to flywheel after you slide it into place. Make sure converter slips into tranny..you will need to turn it several times untill it fits into grrove inside tranny.:)

sounds like your starter ruined your flywheel. replacing the flywheel is not easy. also expensive. call a couple of tranny shops to get an estimate.

Could be starter, or neutral switch in the tranny.
