Question about Dodge Pickup

I have a 2001 Dodge 3500 w/ 24 valve cummins it wont start on its own without the help of starting fluid, and when it starts it idles irratically. but when I clamp off the return fuel line it idles smoothly. I have replaced the cam sensor, overflow valve, and the transfer lift pump. some said I needed to replace the tank module in the fuel tank. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it....

this model cummins doesnt have a crankshaft postion sensor it has a camshaft sensor that sends the same signal. and it runs once it is started but only when i clamp off the return fuel line going back to the tank it has a new fuel filter, new transfer lift pump ,new cam pos sensor, new overflow bypass valve.and after it runs for a certain amount of time it will just die and you wont be able to start it back up for a couple of hours.when you first get it started it is hesitate to rev up acts like not getting enough fuel but when you break the inj. lines there is fuel there. why will it idle correctly with return clamped off and irratically when not. fuel tank module? fuel pump? or WHAT???

Hi, by clamping the return line, you are defeating the fuel pressure limiting valve and applying full pump pressure to the injectors. Sounds like your limiting valve is a bit too limiting. These are expensive though, so I would check the pressure before and after the limiting valve to verify it is below spec. If the pump pressure is low, the problem is the pump and not the valve. Sorry I can't seem to find the exact specs, but I think you need 50-60 psi at the rail.

Hi

It is the indication of an intermittent crank position sensor (CPS) failure. However starting fluid is a volatile fuel and air mixture into the intake, it is possible this is supplying fuel that is otherwise not always present in the cylinders, poss. you have some fuel delivery related issues such as dirty injectors, clogged fuel filer, blocked air filter, or poss. (not fuel related) foul spark plugs. Also weak fuel pump may cause this kind of symptoms. If the car runs on starter fluid then there is no fuel being delivered to the cylinders. Check fuel pump fuse and relay. Check whether the pump is energizing when you turn the key to the on position without starting the car.

2001 dodge 1500 V-6 will start run for alittle bit then won't idle unless you keep gas petel depressed?

This sounds like you have a sticky EGR valve. When it\'s idling rough, try tapping on it with an object such as the butt-end of a screwdriver and see if it suddenly smooths out. If so, you\'ve found your problem and you should consider changing the valve assembly. I hope this helps! :)

Cummins diesel in 2001 Dodge is cutting out and mild surge. code#s are P0500,P0370 P1693

you have codes related to the pcm, transfer pump and a vehicle speed sensor. these could be related or all individual issues. related issued could be wiring, untill you start doing testing it will be hard to tell.
start cheap and test the speed sensor first, then you can clear the codes and continue on any codes come back.

Disconnect the PCM harness connector(s).
Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor harness connector.
Note: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Measure the resistance of the 5 Volt Supply circuit between the VSS harness
connector and the PCM harness connector.
Is the resistance above 5.0 ohms?

I have a 98 dodge 24 valve cummins. Truck would

Harry, there are two failure modes for your problem. If you get a C.E.L. when the problem happens, you will be able to retrieve the codes and will probably find TPS circuit failure codes. The TPS (or APPS) has a flat spot and at the magic position, will drop the engine to an idle.A couple of full throttle applications on the pedal will usually cure the porblem for the moment.Replace the sensor assembly (very expensive). The other mode is a similar drop to idle but without a C.E.L. This is usually corrected by shutting the truck off and re-starting it.This indicates a brain failure on the VP44 injection pump. The solder joints become crystallised on the circuit board from excessive heat cycles. This will create poor connections on the board and cause a loss of power and drop to idle. You can either replace the pump (also very expensive) or if you are mechanically inclined, you can source a brain and solenoid assembly and replace it on the pump. Hope this helps. Ken

Cummins wont start when cold

may be a check valve letting warm expanded fuel to slowly leak back to the tank causing hard start. When starting cold its harder to move the cold thick fluid. Check into it. Good luck..
