Question about Mercedes-Benz C-Class

I have a Mercedes C180 that was constantly going into limp mode. I'd turn the engine off and restart the engine and everything would be fine for a while and then it would go back into limp mode. So I decided that I would replace the fuel filter to see if this was the problem. Unsure as to whether or not it has fixed the limp mode problem as I have an acceleration problem. The car seems to idle okay but when I put my foot on the accelerator the engine surges. Could this be a fuel pressure problem? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated regarding the acceleration problem and the limp mode problem.

    We have the Carsoft Diagnostic equipment but it keeps coming up with a communication error. Unable to open COM1 port. We are going to order a new usb to serial adapter to see if this is the problem.

    The vehicle is not a TurboDiesel.

    Do you have any other suggestions about the engine surge on acceleration? This problem only started after changing the fuel filter.

You need obligatory to access the Engine Control Module (ECM) using suitable diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car, in order to pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) memored. Then you will be full informed about bad components, and you will be able to repair & replace bad pieces and reset the ECM.
Yes, it could be a fuel pressure problem regarding the acceleration, but without access the ECM memory it's not a good idea to change pieces.
Regarding the limp mode problem, I suppose you have a CDI (turbodiesel) engine. I guess that in your case the turbocharger is responsible for engine losing power.
The car goes in "limp home" mode.
After scanning the ECM (Engine Control Module) with a diagnostic equipment you will find this: Turbo Boost pressure control exceeded
1. Engine stopped and ignition switch off. Check all pneumatic connections and hoses between turbocharger actuator = pressure unit for boost-pressure control, boost-pressure control solenoid valve, vacuum reservoir, EGR control solenoid valve, intake-manifold flap solenoid valve, EGR valve with throttle - part of intake manifold. Also the vacuum connection between tandem pump and brake booster. If you find something wrong replace parts. If not go to step 2.
2. Extract the hose of the turbocharger actuator = pressure unit for boost-pressure control part of turbocharger. Instead of the original hose you must place another 1 meter long hose with the same inside diameter, and then you check to inspire yourself the air from the other one extremity of this hose. The mechanical connecting rod of the turbocharger actuator must have a smooth and whole motion. If you can do that with your mouth, then you must replace the boost-pressure control solenoid valve. If you can not reach this with your mouth, then you go to step 3.
3. This is the most difficult work. The problem is that the soot particles deposits inside the turbocharger plugging the variable nozzle geometry mechanism = adjustable vanes of the turbine. If the turbocharger actuator is not able to adjust the turbine vanes the charge air pressure increases too much and ECM goes in "limp home mode" = engine protection software. As a result the "limp home mode" engine still running until you turn the engine off (ignition switch off) and back on when the "limp home mode" is deactivated, but the fault still remain in ECU memory!
4. You must be able to extract the turbo from the engine and then to disassemble the turbocharger, clean inside adjustable vanes mechanism and refit all.

    Then check if the fuel filter was correct choiced, and if it was correct fitted in place. The fuel flow arrow marked on the filter shows the correct position. Also check if fuel lines are not clogged inside. See if fuel flows good when ignition key is turned in ON position.

    I suspect the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, but connect first the diagnostic equipment and access the ECM memory.

use a fault scanner to reset the CPU program If everything is good it should work . if not the fault codes will reappear and you will know what to fix.

have the fault codes read to check for reason it is in limp mode. Fix any faults found and use the scanner to reset the ECM program as the dead battery may have corrupted the program

Then you have a limp home mode this can be accompanied by fault code 2767,2768,2200,2201, This is caused ba a speed sensor and the electrohydraulic control module, you may even need a new speed sensor ring

The best $100 dollars I ever spent car repairing is a OBDII scanner. This lets you diagnose your own problem. Even if you can't fix it you can direct your mechanic. I am not familiar with code 1630 on your Mercedes.

Please describe limp mode. wesleygolden@optonline.net Is the transmission effected, or engine performance. how long has the check engine light been on. And do you have starting issues during cold start. Ooh does this model have a ureurea system in it? An addtive to clean the catalytic system which needs to be service once a year...

Is the vehicle's Check Engine Light on? It should briefly light up when you turn the key on (before you start the engine) to show that the light is working correctly. Based on what I've read I believe you should have one or more trouble codes.
