Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

I have a 1999 Chevy Silverado and just had the front differential rebuilt. I caught the bad bearings soon enough and nothing else was damaged. Everything inside the case looked brand new. After putting it back in it sounds like it is in four wheel drive while it is in two wheel drive.

This requires you nearly overhaul the entire differential minus the ring and pinion, all bearing must be replaced as the metal from the failed one has damaged the others three bearings and they will fail shortly. This job requires many special tools including a hydraulic press, remove the entire unit and have a shop rebuilt it to save money.

Front left diff. seal and bearing bad. steps on changing both?

u will need to take out the whole assembly, and bench work on it. it will be a lot easier and it's better if u buy the differential complete bearing kit due to one failed bearing then the other bearings will have metal shavings on them, causing them to wear out very soon.

I would dismantle the axle, fit new thrust bearings and anything else that is worn/damaged and reassemble/adjust clearance gaps to it, according to the service manual.

these are notorious for the bearings inside the front differential to go bad. if I'm correct, you'll need to either over haul the diff or replace it.
