Question about 1999 Ford Escort

Open Question

My friend just bought a 1999 Escort LX. The day she picked up the car she noticed the Low Fuel light came on so she stopped to get gas. On her way home the car was running real rough and the check engine light came on. We thought it was bad gas she bought. After having the computer read the message pointed to a possible vacuum leak could not find one, so the clerk at Auto Zone said maybe the junk from the bottom of the tank got into the fuel filter. A few days later we brought it by a Good Year and when he tried to read the computer with his reader it would not see it, however he did find the vacuum leak put on a new hose and said It may pass smog now the light is off. We went to have it smogged and it got rejected because it could not read and the Check engine light came back on. On the way home we noticed that the Odometer and speedometer stopped working. I had a friend who knows about cars look at it and said It may be a bad ground. Any Ideas?? Thank you in advance for any help you can give us.

Whatever it had when it was sold in OR is what will be required in calif, it goes by engine calibration number, that is on a sticker on the valve cover, another way to get it is to run the VIN number on a Ford information computer, we call this the OASIS SYSTEM. Also check the emission sticker on the radiaor support under the hood.

SOURCE: P171 and p174 check engine light

I think autozone gave you the wrong information. My manual shows that p171 is the oxygen sensor unable to switch, and p174 is the same only the switching is too slow. Change the oxygen sensor on bank #1, and see if that works.Make sure that it is a heated sensor, match it with the old one.

Water in gas, plugged fuel injector, plugged fuel filter, bad plugs or wires. Its tune-up time! Start with the easy stuff and go from there. Hopefully it's an easy fix.
Could also be plugged catalytic convertercatalytic converter or bad torque converter

My 1999 ford escort is not getting enough gas to the engine

Your going to want and check fuel pressure to see if its in spec. If fuel pressure is low...I would check for a restriction.. like a plugged fuel filter or weak fuel pump.

Check for a plugged fuel filter, after you check the fuel cap is on correctly. If that's not the problem,it could be the fuel pump. You can get the fuel pressure read at the rail by any reputable shop. don-ohio

I jsut bought this 93 ford escort lx station wagon

If this is a manual transmission the clutch has burned out, it may need to be replaced, if you do not do your own mechanic work I would suggest that you take it to a good local repair shop and have them check it out. If this is an automatic I would still suggest the same, but the actual problem could be more complex. Hope this helps, let me know.

1996 Buick Regal, 96k miles - Recent purchase - doesn't seem right.

Will your 'friend' take it back? 1 prob, likely a vaccum leak at the intake. 2 prob, at 'stopping'?? Brake pads. Stopped, good question. 3 prob, either the plastic cover or the horn pin under the steering wheel. 4 prob, This sounds like the exhaust 02 sensor is acting up. 5 prob, shock bushings or rubbers mounts on sway bar. Or the top bearing on a strut. 6 prob, Fixing the past probs 'may' solve this? 7 prob, Just live with this! You have enough on you plate already! Frankster016
