Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

96 Cavalier won't start. Car wants to start and now the anti theft system light is on solid. Ran perfectly until my dad started screwing with my electrical system today with the key in the on position. I suspect the anti theft has gone off and it's shut off the fuel pump. Is there a fix for this without going to a shop? I have tried leaving the key on for 20 minutes, then shutting it off for 30 seconds, then attempting to start the vehicle... the light stays solid and doesn't blink or shut off. There is NO chip in the key. If there is supposed to be one, I have never had the correct key for this car in the 9 years I've had it. I have not bothered taking the battery cable off or pulling fuses... it doesn't make sense to me that those should work if the antitheft system should indeed prevent theft.

Where is the anti-theft system located in the car and how do you reset it.

the anti- theft system is integrated into the BCM(body control module) under the driver's side of the dash. is the security light flashing? if so turn the key to start then to the run position, leave the key in the run position until the light stops flashing. you may need to repeat these steps 3 times for the car to start.

Hello I have a 2002 Cavalier... The ignition lock will not turn with my key anymore... I removed switch so now I am able to turn the car over using a screw driver... But the anti-theft system won't let...

Yes there is a bypass. Costs about $200.00. You should be able to put the key close enough to the cylinder to get the security to go off. I don't know what you did to get the cylinder out. but there is a chip mounted to the steering column. once the key is close enough to it it will let the car start. If you broke the chip getting the cylinder out then you have some money to put out to get it running.

Replaced ignition switch in 1999 chevy cavaliar rs, anti-theft light comes on and stays on and won't allow car to start and remain on or run

You have to do a relearn procedure on the anti-theft system:

Attempt to start the vehicle. Leave the ignition on until the THEFT SYSTEM indicator turns off (about 10 minutes). Turn the ignition switch off. Leave the ignition switch off with key in for about 10 minutes. Attempt to start vehicle.

Changed out battery to new one now car will not start with key but can jump solinoid and start 97 sunfire 2.4l

Are you getting any anti theft lights? The sunfire is pretty similar to the cavalier, and I worked on a 96 that had a problem with the passlock system.

If you are not familiar, you can turn the key but nothing happens. There is a yellow "anti-theft" light that blinks on the gauges. There is a resistor in the ignition switch that sends a signal to the computer to tell the car to start.

Your problem sounds similar, and since you just changed the battery, you may have reset the system. To re-enable it you unfortunately have to go to the dealer. I searched EVERYWHERE and found no quick fix for it, and I took the cavalier to the dealer as well. Hope thats not your issue, but if so let me know I will try to help however I can.

I am having the same issue with my anti-theft device in my 2003 Alero. Last year it stopped running and would not turn-over. $400 later, Brakemax said they just had to reset the anti-theft device. oK,...

the shop that told you they ripped it out only ripped you off unless they removed some aftermarket alarm system i,m a gm mechanic and if you remove the factory anti-theft on a 2003 olds alero it will not run ever again until re-installed make sure your battery is charged good turn igntion switch to run position but do not try to start security light should be flashing let car sit with switch on and light flashing for ten minutes light should stop flashing now start your car this is how to reset anti-theft was that worth $400.00 and again why let a bussiness named brakemax look at a no start condition keep on and you will be BROKE to the max HOPE THIS HELPS AND STAY AWAY FROM THEM YOUR FRIEND @ HELPMAX

NO, you will need to have Mr. Chop Shop fix it, or take it to a real mechanic and send him the bill.

Disconnected/reconnected computer & 98 chevy cavalier wont sart

The computer needs to have a very good ground also check the wires going into the computer and make sure nothing came loose and there is no rust on the connections. If this does not correct your problem put the computer back in its factory location and try it
