Question about 2003 BMW 330

1 Answer

I have a BMW 330Ci 2000 Convertable with a hydraulic leak in the top mechanism. What do I have to do to find the cause of this leak? Do I have to remove the whole roof mechanism from the car or can I access the main hydraulic units and associated hoses/lines and cylinders by removing either the back seat or the boot linings.

Well, replace the offending unit, then bleed the air out of the system...Sometimes you have to remove components and invert them to get all of the air out.

The headliner has to come out to access this area of the frame.
The leaking oil runs down the frame into the fender in front of the rear tire and leaks out onto the ground. The cylinder over the window is pretty close to the front of the frame. I suspect a pinched or otherwise damaged line may be possible for the leak.

To replace these lines you do not have to remove the headliner or the top material, the only lines that require removal of anything big is the main cylinders and the valve block. To replace these you need to remove the complete top assembly which sounds a lot difficult but it comes out pretty easy. But your problem will not require the top removal.------

You're most likely low on hydraulic fluid, the top is operated by hydraulic pressure. If the fluid is low you have a leak, very common issue.

Bmw diagnostic codes

I have no p2402 code under the BMW list but in the OB-11 P2 codes it refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) leak detection pump, control--circuit high===causes --wiring short to positive---EVAP leak detection pump. IF this in the area of your problem then good otherwise you may have to got o BMW service centre to get what the code refers to.

A orange light is on all the time and the battery keeps going flat when all lights and heater r on but dont think it is alternator on my bmw 330ci convertable

dirty battery posts or poor connections, battery needs to be replaced ...loose alt belt. other than that the alt seems like the likely cause.

How do you add oil to the convertable motor?

On a z4 the whole top has to be removed to add oil. The hydraulic pump is connected to the top in the drivers side b-pillar; Usually the convertible top motor will end up being submerged in water because the drains get clogged. I would recommend taking the vehicle to your local bmw dealership

Convertable top will go down but will not come back up.

I had the same problem with my 95 GT. You may have a leak in your system (motor, lines, cylinders). It seems there just isnt enough fluid to push the top up. I think Ford used the same system for 01 also. I had to replace the hydraulic cylinder that pushes the top up. My fluid leaked out because one of the cylinders was bad. This may be the problem. Located the motor and look for leaks.
