Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

1 Answer

I have a Montero Sport 2003, last week I had Freon added to be prepared for the summer, I noticed a noise and ask the mechanic, he said it was the fan but nothing to worry about. I drove the Montero for 2 days and did not hear anything, Now in 2 different occasions it has made a loud screeching noise and only after being idling in a red light, the Montero only has 36,000 miles and I have had the oil changed regularly. Is loud awful noise. I really will appreciate any suggestion. Thank you Kaibil

Thank you for your answers, I took the Montero to Tire Plus, they change the oil and called to tell me that the 2 belts are cracking and the other one is dry, the price they gave me was $131.00 , I asked them that since I did not have the money for the 3, could they replace the one making the noise, they said they did not which one was making the noise. Could the Belts be the issue?
    Thank you

I got 3 different estimates, they are $125.00, $160,and $221.00. this are the parts that TiresPlus typed in their paper: 17360 V-Belt - 382K4 POLY-RIB Belt, 445K5 POLY-RIB Belt and remove and replace ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT and they typed + A/C interferes add.
Do you know if the Serpentine is one of the above?
    Thank you

If the noise started after you added the Freon, then it perhaps is your AC clutch. Normally if you have an automatic AC system, then when the Freon gets low, the auto system will not allow the AC to engage, only allowing the fan to circulate outside air. In order to add Freon to the system, the AC lock out has to be over ridden, in order for the compressor to **** in the Freon. This in turn engages the AC system so that the clutch engages, thus engages your AC system. The clutch bearings may be at fault.

any idea how much this would cost?

  • Norman Worley Mar 23, 2011

If it is the clutch and not the radiator fans then the whole compressor arrangement will have to be replaced at a cost of 800-1200 bucks depending on where the work is done. The higher amount is charged at a dealer as the cost per hour of mechanic's time is greater. If is the assist radiator fans as the original person told you, it would be 150-200 bucks.

It could be the "Serpentine Belt idler pulley" that is making the noise, it is also called a"belt tensioner", and it is a small pulley bolted on to a spring mounted arm that keeps pressure on the belt that wraps around your crank pulley and Ac etc. This pulley has bearings that are sealed lubricated at the factory, but as the car gains millage the pulley looses lubrication and makes noise as the bearings rub against bare metal. If it was making noise at the "Tire Plus", they should know that it is the idler pulley. I think that they just want to sell you belts at an inflated price as the three belts should not cost more than 30 bucks and a half hour to put them on say another 20 bucks for a total of 50 bucks. The idler is around 100 bucks see: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/detail... I would get someone you trust to listen to the vehicle and see if you can determine where the noise is coming from and go from there Your belts are probably ok, but if the idler pulley seizes up it will break the serpentine belt, and your car will not be able to run very far.

The 17360 V Belt is the belt for the Radiator Fan and the 382k4 is the serpentine belt of one make and the 445K5 is another serpentine belt of another make sold by Advance Stores.

The following are pictures of the suspect parts from another site, just click on the suggested sites and take a look for your self.

any one of the above can cause the noise that you are experiencing.

Check system for shorts. I have a 02 Sport that I am on my 6th alternator since last November, 2010. The last time, my car broke down outside of Natchez and I had a shade tree mechanic work on the car. He found several corroded & frayed ground wire connections. I don't know if this will solve my problem, but it's probably worth the check.

Your belt is loose (and it just needs tightening) or it is worn and needs to be replaced. It may look ok but they glaze over; all the little ridges get shinny and slip.

Aircondition not working....just blowing warm air.....fan is working

Either you are out of coolent or the compressor is not working.

First check the fuses, then lift the hood and have a friend turn the air on. The compressor should cycle, if not take it to a mechanic. If it does cycle you are low on freon, take it to a mechanic for a system charge. Make sure they check for leaks first.
