Question about 2003 Saturn ION

2 Answers

2003 ion has no drive in "D", "I", and "L", which is all the forward gears. Reverse is working fine. Also noticed the shifter is loose in the 3 forward gears, but normal in "P", "N", and "R". This happened twice in 2 weeks, but acted normal after restarting car. This time I think it's down for good.

The problem is the cable lock at the transmission has failed, or possible just popped up. Look under the hood at the back side of the transmission where the cable comes to the transmission. You will most likely see the cable and be able to move it about once the shifter is out of park. You may get lucky and be able to get the vehicle back into park and resnap the cable lock back onto the cable. Try adding two zip ties around the cable where it is held and take it to your nearest repair facility to permanently repair this problem.

Will not move in any gear and also wouldnt work in forward or reverse

If its automatic. Torque converter consists of 3 components. Impeller(bowl like dome with fins inside it for fluid displacement), turbine(same as above), stator(located in the centre; like a fans blades). Fluid flows and reaches optimal flow to give drive to the wheels. If there is no fluid, then there is no drive. Check gearbox fluid level. Or maybe the gearbox broke, or the diff broke or a cv shaft or a cv joint.

2003 chevrolet cavalier, manual transmission lost 2nd, 4th and reverse but still has 1st, 3rd and 5th gears.

Sounds like one of the levers inside the transmission is either broken or otherwise disengaged. Remove the shifter to see if you can see any obvious reason.

The transmission control module controls the transmission so it is the first place I would look before removing the transmission box.

I have a 1990 GMC RALLY VAN 3500. When I put the van in any forward gear it seems as though the emergency brake is on. There is force on the engine as though it is trying to turn the transmission but no...

when you say you checked the rear end for problems and things appeared good did you check the rear end internally to see if there is a broken gear tooth or metal in the differential oil.i`ve one were this was the problem(a broken gear) that would get caught and stop the forward motion or make it hard to turn.i`ve also had it were the rear brakes were causing a forward motion problem like your having.the shoes were rotating so far when the drum was turning then apply and lock up until it was put in reverse.just some things to check out.if things were working good with the rear drive shaft removed and the problem starts with it in then the problem is in the back end some where as mentioned above.

If I understand you correctly, you have ALL forward gears working, but reverse doesn't?... then the problem is in the transmission itself or the linkage on the trans linkage into reverse.

Reverse does not work all forward gears work fine however it does shift a little harder since reverse went out

Man, I have had that problem before in a camaro years ago and it was that the reverse clutches went out but, you could drive it forward and had to repair tranny.

1999 F250 only goes in reverse, no forward gears.

I believe that reverse is operated by a brake band. So it seems to be stuck. It is operated by a piston, and the seal could have swelled and caused too much friction. But you could loosen up the adjustor so that it is disengaged, in order to get forward gears again. Perhaps you can force the piston to retract as well, once you drop the pan again.
