How do I know if it is the fuel pump or the relay on a 92 vw jetta 1.8 4cyl?

you can jump the fuel injection relay. This will make the fuel pump run continuously--test only! You can hear the fuel pump run when you try to start the car. You can hook up a multimeter to the fuel pump plug to test for 12V. no volts at plug? then change relay or fuse.

Ran out of gas and now my 02 jetta want start

what may have happened is that your fuel pump relay needs to be replaced. look in your owners manual for its location. and you might also have to buy a new fuel pump because sometimes when you run out of gas you have essentially sucked out not just all of the remaining gas but you have also sucked out all of the dirt and garbage in the bottom of the gas tank and now the injectors might have to be replaced too.

If you're car has been running fine, then suddenly won't start, the cause is frequently that the fuel pump cutoff has been tripped. Open your trunk, and look for a label for a fuel pump cutoff switch. Locate the switch, press it in, and see if the engine will start.

I have air coming into the fuel system on my jetta diesel

NO it does not have a fuel pump in the tank. It uses vaccum.
and if their are tiny bubbles in the clear line coming from the fuel filter to the injection pump that is normal. Even when the car is not running it is normal to see bubbles in the line. hope this helps.

Cant find fuel pump relay

Hey twinbullet,

For 93-98 Jetta models, the fuses and relays are located on the drivers side, behind the lower dash panel.

The fuel pump relay is in Position 12 (lower right corner)
