Question about 1998 Ford Expedition

2 Answers

I have a 1998 ford expedition with a 5.4 motor I had a intake gasket replaced which caused all kinds of problems, now i'm being told that one of the valves is broken and that I need another engine or to junk the car. Can the valve be fixed and if so approximately how much would it cost?

Did anyone explain to you how the valve was 'broken"??? Repairing a damaged valve requires removing the intake and head, having the head cleaned up and valves replaced/lapped and seats cleaned up, new head gasket installed, reassembly. These engines have very short threads in the plug wells, so care has to be taken when installing plugs so they are not flung from the engine while running. You are looking at anywhere from $750 to $1000 to repair the damaged valve, but I'd want to know how it happened-you might find a good engine in a junkyard or craigslist, but by the time you installed it you might spend more and it may (or may not) be in worse shape than your engine. You should know the condition of the engine based on how you've cared for it.

The cylinder heads can be removed and sent out
to a machine shop, to be repaired

I would only guess that all involved in
working on the heads and related issues
could go to $2000.00 more or less

You don't junk the truck
You don't junk the current motor

You could pull the motor and freshen
up it up with a complete rebuild or just
do the heads

If your temp gauge goes up, then it is a head gasket problem, or intake gasket leak that makes it loose pressure.

More likely the head gasket--there is no coolant in the intake manifold. This is a big job. I did one recently and it took almost 2 days to replace both head gaskets.
