Im going down the road and the check engine light comes on and it starts spitting and sputtering and shuts off

Try changing spark plugs and distributer cap

I would change the fuel filter first, if that doesn't fix the prob. check the throttle position sensor.

check fro broken timing belt/chain

Check the fuel pump , filter, throttle position sensor.

I would first check the plugs .If that don't work then you have a timing that's out or fuel starvation.When last did you change the airfilter

The check engine light sets a fault code, have you had the code read with a code reader? What is that code?

i would take it back. they should cover it. sounds like mass air flow sensor. if it was barelly detailed it water might of seeped into the intake thus sucking small amount of water which then causes sputtering and a little lack of power.

Im not trying to be sarcastic, but does it have fuel delivery to the cylinders?
Test For Fuel, spark, and timing.
There is to much to explain better take it to a Cerifide technician
Or clarify the thing its doing.
How long on the road b4 it did this?
Did the check engine light up?

when the last time u did a tune up?

check your spark plug wires.
