Question about 1995 Cadillac DeVille

2 Answers

I have a 1994 Cadillac DeVille and it has a very loud whining noise which seems to getting louder. I've been told it is the power steering unit and not to worry about it. Don't you think it is advisable to have it replaced? I'm afraid some day the power steering unit will fail and I'll be without power steering but am told that will not happen. Please advise.

If you have the money and time to get it replaced I would replace it. Have you checked the power steering fluid to make sure it's at the proper level? That is easy to check under the hood and the cap will say power steering fluid on it. There will be a level indicator on the reserve for it. Losing the power steering isn't bad but makes it tough to turn the wheel at low speed or when you are parked and trying to back out and turn. But I would check the fluid first, then if you take it to a mechanic have them make sure it is the power steering before they make an unnecessary fix and charge you if it's not that. That whining noise may be the belts too, but I would think whoever told you it was the power steering would have known clearly if it was the belts. Without hearing it it's tough to tell but hope that gets you in the right direction.

Yes. I would check the fluid level and belt tightness and perhaps change the belt. Also see if you are losing fluid at the pump or steering box. The noise might be air in the lines or from low hydraulic pressure if you hear it more while turning. If the noise persists have a second opinion or just change the pump to give yourself a margin of safety.

Engine whine

It could be any of the pulleys on the engine. Water pump, ac compressor, alternator, idler, or power steering pump. I would say that it is more than likely the power steering pump wining. That would be my first suspect

Sounds like the bearing on the pulley that runs the Power Steering pump is shot. Have it serviced.

There is a loud "whining"

Power steering pumps whine when they are low on fluid, or if they are goin bad. Serpentine belts also whine in cold weather or when they are goin bad. Tru spraying just a little WD40 on the belts when its running, if it goes away, you should be thinking about a new belt. If nothing changes, check the power steering fluid, if its full, take to a mechanic

Really loud growling noise and vibrations through the whole car when it is started and then gets louder when you try to turn. plus the more you turn the harder it gets to turn.

check your power steering fluid under the hood, sounds like your problem. make sure not to over fill it. look under the front of car after you've filled it up for leaks onto ground. you may have a bad steering hose. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

Making noise when turning steering wheel but no leakage

The power steering pump that is used in your car is notorious for noise issues, it is a loud whine which gets louder as you turn the steering wheel right or left, flush the system fluid and replace the pump.
