Question about 1995 Ford Escort

I have a whirring, rattling sound whenever I change gear on my 1995 Ford Escort - I think it may be my fly wheel but have no idea what sort of cost I'm looking at for repairs?

It could be a clutch related problem if it happens when you push the clutch pedal,( possibly the release bearing ) My labor guide shows about 5.5 hours for labor, resurfacing the flywheel is around $50.00, a clutch kit is probably under $150.00. So I would say under $650.00, it wouldnt hurt to call around for a better price. I like to change the rear crank seal while I am there, should the rear crank seal fail in the future, you would have to pay to have the transmission removed again... I hope this helps.

Thanks - the noise only seems to start after my first gear change - when I start the car and just leave it to idle over, the engine stays smooth and quiet - but as soon as I go into first gear and start to drive, the whirring and faint rattling starts although it isn't a constant noise. It was doing this when I drove it to the garage for its MOT in early December but the mechanic never said anything and although the sound isn't getting any worse, I thought it best to get it fixed as soon as I can afford it.
I bought the car 5 years ago and it's never had it's clutch changed, although it has had a full set of brakes and I seem to be getting a caliper sticking sometimes - sorry if I sound a bit clueless, I'm a woman who usually leaves the car stuff to my garage :D

If the problem is the clutch release bearing, you would more likely hear the noise whenever the clutch pedal is pressed. If the noise begins after the clutch pedal is released and the car is in first gear, the problem is more likely in the transmission. If there is a faulty input or front counter shaft bearing, the noise would be loudest in first gear, quieter in second, the least noise in fourth gear. With the engine running, the car not moving, in neutral, with the drivers door open, you might hear the whirring noise faintly. Then if you push the clutch pedal the noise would then stop, release the pedal, the noise starts again. Has the transmission fluid level been ckecked lately?...best of luck to you.

Actually, I've got to admit, I haven't checked my transmission fluid - I'll buy some tomorrow from Halfords.
I've been paying closer attention to it as I was driving today and it's a definite "loose" rattling, whirring sound and starts as soon as I drive away from the kerb and then it can be heard faintly sometimes when I pull up. It stops when I drive up a straight road at a steady 30mph, but as soon as I change gear it starts again - I've tried keeping my clutch pedal depressed for a bit longer to listen to it and it seems to be more prevalent when the clutch is down.
Thankyou for all of your help - at least I won't be walking into the garage completely clueless now

The sound that you are hearing it the throw out bearing. The noises that you hear is a sign that is going out. You will have to have the transmission removed and might as well have the clutch replace with the throw out bearing as a set due to the work that needs to be done to change it.

Thanks - any ideas on how much I should be looking at to pay for repairs? I have the car booked into a garage I trust for April 01st but I don't wait any nasty surprises

My Ford Escort GL 1.6 Jerks whenever i reach 80km/h, the stench of petrol is also high during this time.

When it's in neutral and you hit the gas, does the rpm rise slowly? And if you try to give it too much throttle does it choke and try to die? It sounds like your catalytic converter is partially plugged, or there is some other exhaust restriction. If the check engine light is on, there may be relevant diagnostic codes available, some of the auto parts chains used to read the codes for you for free, but I'm not certain that is still the case.

Flywheel or something grings against the starter when clutch is engaged

There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

My automatic escort will not shift out of first gear. I will drive in first gear, slip it into neutral, then back into drive, and will get second gear for about five seconds. Any ideas?

Try replacing Speed sensor.I have 95 Escort that while driving for about 20 miles would shift into low gear and not shift back into higher gears. After letting it sit for awhile it would drive fine for about 20 miles then do the same thing.Had the speed sensor replaced and works fine now.

Ineed a timing diagram for 1995 1.9 ford escort

both the cam gear and the crank gear timing marks should point straight up. if you are replacing your timing belt you may also want to replace your timing belt tensioner and water pump. I have owned several escorts and have learned the hard way that it is a good idea to replace all of these at the same time.

My escort rs turbo will not start.i dont no if it's the startes motor but it makes a horrible noise when it trying to turn the engin over.

from what you describe, it sounds like the ring gear has gone on the fly wheel or the teeth on the starter motor spigot
