Funny geezer, if repairing the car is not an option, have it scrapped, DVLA will give you 50 quid or so.
By the way replace spark plugs, and if you have a code reader at hand, scan the computer codes, and publish results here, this is all we can do.

Hi,

Initially, what may be required is simply cleaning the injectors. When cold, the residue, unburned fuel, carbon deposits tend to burn slower and or obstruct the fuel spray. Once started and have burned off or the combustion chamber has reached a certain temperature, then said dirt/carbon deposits has no effect. This is a fairly easy job and any competent/qualified mechanic could perform. Of course it would be to your advantage to simply have all 4 replaced.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

Additionally, you could try checking for the presence of a pulsating +12VDC on the terminal/wire/connector of the erring injector while somebody else is cranking the engine. This +12 should be present (though pulsating) on each and every injector. This triggers the injector to spray the fuel inside the combustion chamber. Other than a dirty/clogged injector, this is the next most likely possibility. A missing pulsating +12 could indicate a loose connection, wiring problem to the ECU/ECM control module of the Golf. In worst case scenarios, it could be the module itself.

    Cheers.

Have you at least tried removing and cleaning? There are also fuel additives that are suppose to help clean the injectors.

Other then the glow plugs (being diesel-likely), the injectors are the most likely culprits in a diesel engine with problems such as yours on cold start.

does the starter motor turn for some time before the engine fires up or does the engine start easily?
does the engine idle smoothly or is it shaking?

You might want to check your injection timing - the pump timing in relation to the crank- and cam timing as well as the injection timing device on the pump itself.
Then there is the needle lift sensor on the number 3 injector that can play up as well.
These things usually play up on high milage...

Check the fuel lines, fuel filter, what is the mileage? If it is high than it might a sign of injector pump or injectors.

you dont say what miles the car has done.but you should now be using semi synthetic 20/50 oil and try using a fuel additive(redex/wynns)to clean the injectors.if you are using oil it is possible that the engine has lost some of its compression due to ring/valve wear.did you know that to convert your engine to a 130/150bhp unit, you only need to change the ecu try"diesel tuning"website.....

look at the anti shudder valve (asv) look at pics on net. Its an air intake valve that shuts in order to stop the engine. It sometimes sticks shut. Syptoms are engines tries to fire but then turns over very freely but wont start. If it is this the whole air intake system needs de coking.

We think it could be the engine management system - would recommend going to a reputable garage for it to be reprogrammed.
