Question about 2006 Mercury Milan

1 Answer

I am getting a lot lower gas mileage recently in my 2006 Mercury Milan Premier. I was averaging about 25 mpg and now down to 20 or a little less. What can I have checked?

Hello, First thing would be the type of gas you are using. Gas with alcohol in it would not get the mileage of Gas without alcohol. If you were getting 25mpg and drop 10% because of 10% Alcohol in your gas, then that accounts for 2.5MPG of the loss. There is some heat value in the Alcohol, but rule of thumb is less gas is less mileage.

You did not indicate if any "Check Engine" lights were on. You can try to get the car scanned, Autozone, Oreillys, and Advance do it free. But some cars will not record a problem that is intermittent, some cars have to reach a plateau of intermittent events to display a "Checklight".

Not all of the scanners are equal and some places will not connect or test a car without the "Checklight" displaying. Have clean oil and Air filter installed, but watch your tire pressure. Most of the time the Oilchange places let air out of the tires. Have tires inflated below the Maximum rating on the tire BEAD, but usually above the pressure on the door label. Automakers want you to enjoy the soft ride, but it costs you money at the pump.

If your Brakes are dragging it will make a difference. The rear wheels are 2 brakes in one. The Emergency brakes are harder to inspect. Your car is 5 Years old and if you have not had Brake work done, parts may be rusted and not fully retracted.

These are the basics, I think the basics will go along ways into restoring your mileage. The newer cars have more Electronics which are good for keeping an Engine in Tune. Unless you get a "Checklight" most of the potential problems are those which are not monitored. Like tire pressure, clean filters, and Brakes.

I have got a 2005 Equinox and I'm getting horrible fuel mileage ! Like 7mpg in the city and 17 to 21 mpg on the highway , I've put new tires , battery , original equipment spark plugs and wires and still...

There are many things that could conspire to rob mileage. My first thought was possible transmission slippage. Although your city rating is horrible, the highway mileage is just a little off. 23-25 hwy is correct, 23 for lousy doped California gas, and 25 elsewhere. My guess is that you have slippage but above 45 mph, you are still getting advantage once the converter lock takes effect in overdrive. Just slippage until you reach that lock point.
Start with a full diagnostic of all stored codes in the ODB II computer, both for the engine and the transmission, then an evaluation of your transmission from a good shop.
Good luck, the Equinox is a darned good car,and worth the effort.

Low gas mileage city and hiway @ 4-5 MPG below MSRP sticker data of 15 and 21MPG on a NEW 2013 Silverado. 2000 miles on odometer and mileage not improving.

is this calculated mileage or what the estimated mileage is showing on the dash. Have you checked to see what you get on just the freeway?

What are your driving habits like?

How is your tire pressure?

Do you make a lot of short trips?

2007 kia rondo seems to use alot of gas

I have the same issue of low gas mileage. My 2008 Kia Rondo with V6 (2.7Lt) gets 20-21 mpg in average. Even for highway mileage, it is around 21-22mpg. Very poor gas mileage. Disappointed. I hope it would improve in the future.

Poor gas mileage in a 2008 Saturn Hybrid Vue

You are always going to get worse gas mileage with E85 than regualr gasoline.  My sister has a colbalt and she mixes 1/2 gas and 1/2 e85.  The dealer told her she could do this to improve mileage.  I would not try it in your car unless you check with the dealer first, it could mess your engine up if you do it.  If you are getting that mileage with gasoline, then i would change spark plugs to bosch platnium 2 or something that allows more spark.

change your spark plugs if they haven't been changed in awhile. check your tires for the propper psi there should be a sticker on the inside of your drivers door that will tell you recomended air pressures go by this not the recomendations on the tires. also where are you getting you gas does it contain ethanol sometimes this can burn faster.

Gas milage seems to have dropped.

26 from 28 can be as simple as low air pressure in the tires and outside air temp changes.

The mileage estimates on your sticker are EPA mileage estimates, which are notorious for being inaccurate. They overhauled their testing standards for 2008, but real world mileage can be much different. Driving like a grandma doesn't mean much. Living in areas with a lot of hills or mountains will decrease mileage, as will rain and snow. Check your tire pressure often, as improper tire inflation can hurt your mileage. Other than that, you're probably getting average for that vehicle. Welcome to SUVs.
