Question about Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

1 Answer

I have a 1985 mercedes 380sl. I recently replaced the fuel filter, and it immediatly started blowing white smoke from the tailpipe. I think I resolved that issue( REPLACED THE PLUGS), but now there is a HEAVY gas fume-no smoke- exhausting( I still have the air cleaner assembly off)..not so much from the tailpipe as the engine area. THERE ARE NO LEAKS......??? Note: there were no real issues BEFORE I replaced the fuel filter, The gas line adjacent to it was leaking, so while I had the filter off anyway I replaced it. thanks for your help, Vikki

Hi

Check for any leak. The easiest way to locate the leakage is after fueling. Fuel it as full as possible and look for the leak. There is a vent tube that goes up to the filler neck, so try to be sure all the gas goes into the filler tube and check the vent after fueling.
All you need to see is one drop to locate the bad line. Also probability of leaky injector, quite possibly at the seal. A leaky injector will drop raw fuel into the cylinder. If this raw fuel is not burned properly and does not go through the exhaust system, it ends-up in the oil pan. Raw gasoline will wash off all oil from the cylinder walls and dilute your engine oil.

While my tail pipe blows out white smoke

Whatever you do, do NOT continue driving it this way until it is fixed. Hydraulic lockup can bend a piston rod ot even detonate the engne.
I think it got so hot at one point that it blew a head gasket.
Have a qualified mechanic perform a cooling system Pressure check.
If it holds pressure, which I doubt, it may be antifreeze running into your cylinders from he intake manifold. But the pressure test should tell you which head gasket it is, but have BOTH replaced, since they both underwent the stress.AND while replacing those gaskets, a new intake gasket will be installed too, as a matter of course. The price is about the same, since they have the top of the engine apart anyway. Just for information: White "smoke" is vaporized coolant or water being pushed out the tailpipe from the engine. Blue "Smoke" is oil, and Black "smoke" is soot- too much unburned fuel.

I ran my chev. 1990 pickup out of oil and now it smokes so bad. and i think my fuel pump is going out but not sure??

Sounds like you may have ruined the piston rings and this is allowing oil to seep in to the combustion chamber hence your smoke. Or if it overheated when you ran out of oil it is possible that you have a bad head gasket now. Check both your coolant and oil for signs, oil will have a white froth, or darkening of your coolant. Hope that helps you.

White smoke from tailpipe, running poorly.

Blown head gasket for sure if its a petrol engine.

If its diesel then its overfuelling.

Heap of white smoke on startup but not always

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough heat to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles go out the tailpipe and typically produce a rich fuel smell. It's not unusual to see white smoke in the exhaust during cold weather until the engine warms up.

Faulty glow plugs or control module can cause white smoke on engine start up.

Low engine cranking speed may also produce white smoke.

If white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, the engine may have one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump.

Low compression or air in the fuel system can also be a source of white smoke.

My truck blows white smoke

Hello!
There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).
Good Luck
