Question about 1994 Nissan Pickup

1994 nissan pickup 2.4 #3 cyl flooding, raw gasoline runs out the tailpipe. 150 plus compression,new fuel injector,spark plugs are new and firing but not blue spark. scan tool shows codes 13 and 41,coolant temp sensor and air temp sensor. coolant sensor connection is broke off and air temp sensor has 1 broke wire. also shows faulty crank angle sensor. 1342 firing order ccw rotation. Does #3 cyl "flood" when these sensors are bad?Thanks

An engine will flood if there's too much fuel going in because of a stuck choke, a bad spark not igniting the fuel, failed temperature sensors, bad fuel regulator and timing and etc.

Code 13 indicates problem in Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit.

Code 41 indicates problem in Air Temperature Sensor Circuit.

It could be many different things. Check the vacuum lines. Check spark plugs. Check compression in engine, check fuel lines filter and injectors or carb. 100 psi per cylinder is way too low--should be in the vicinity of 150-165 per cylinder
back firing indicates wrong firing order and as you have replaced the plugs etc check that you have the leads on the correct plugs in the correct order
the timing for the engine should be around the 10 degree btdc and not tdc

Can't get number 2 cyclinder to fire. See spark when I pull the wire off. Looks the same as number 3 but can't tell if its fuel injector issue or not enough spark?


Have you switched the spark plugs to see if it is a bad plug ?
Switching the plug in cyl 2 with another cyl will tell you if the plug is bad if the problem moves to the other cyl.
It takes alot more voltage to fire a plug in a compressed cyl than it does out in the open. If the plug is fuel soaked it will never fire.

You've done a great job of trouble shooting thus far. I would certainly suspect the injector after all of that. But, I didn't see anything about you replacing the spark plug itself. I would try that first as a crack in the insulator (even hairline) will cause mis-fires. If the spark plug doesn't fix the mis-fire, it cold be caused by a bad fuel injector, bad signal (like a loose harness or bad wire) to the fuel injector, or a leak or valve issue on that cylinder.

You could try the Clear Flood procedure....Throttle wide open and crank engine . This sometimes works, but.....

These engines suffer from fuel wash down. The gasoline washes away the oil in the cylinders.....and compression goes away, not making the fuel fire off.

The film of oil in the cylinders and rings seals the piston to the bore making for good compression.

Remove the spark plugs....crank over the motor to eject raw fuel...dribble a couple of spoonfuls of motor oil down each plug hole and crank briefly.

Install plugs and try restart.

My 1994 nissan pickup cranks but will not start


Need to check for fuel. Easy way to do this is wipe one of the plugs clean and dry and put back in without wire attched. Crank truck as if you were trying to start it. Pull plug out and check to see if it is wet. Should smell like gasoline. If so, recommend you replace the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. If not, you have a fuel problem.

White smoke from tailpipe, running poorly.


Blown head gasket for sure if its a petrol engine.

If its diesel then its overfuelling.

Not firing right on no.4


First check plug and make sure the right plug for this vehicle,make sure that the heat rating for this plug is correct. Your problem could be a wrong heat rating plug been installed. Also make sure that the misfire is due to a bad plug and NOT a bad injector or injector wiring or uneven compression or even bad coil. Check injector wiring and make sure it not shorting or broken. To check injector pulse use a NOID light can be bought at almost any auto parts store like Auto-zone etc. Also compression can be checked with compression guage. A rule of thumb to go by is if any cylinder has more than 10 PSI in difference in compression there is a problem like a burnt valv etc. Here is a n example cyl# 1 170psi cyl#2 176 psi cyl#172psi cyl# 4 150 psi, there is a problem with cylinder # 4 and will cause a miss from cylinder #4.
