You can pull the oil dip stick and check to see if antifreeze has entered oil it will be muddy looking. Engine may run rough or sluggish, excessive white smoke out of the exhaust. Engine may overheat. These are commen signs of a blown head gasket. Hope this helps.

What could cause a 1997 chev blazer to overheat

Blown head gasket, water pump, clogged radiator or leaking radiator, timing, faulty thermostat, cracked head, Thermo fans not working. They are a few things you can check without buying expensive equipment to check the engine.
Blown head gasket= remove spark plugs and check them for any signs of water on them. also check for bubbles in the radiator when you remove the cap and do a compression test on each cylinder.
Water Pump= remove radiator cap and see if there is movement in the water.
thermostat= remove and put in water with a temp gauge and see if it opens when the water heats up and at what temp.
Thermo fans= unplug from wiring harness and run a wire from your battery positive and negative terminal to the 2 pin plug, touch the other ends of the wires to the terminals in the plug to see if the therm fans turn, if they do the Thermo sender unit may be faulty or the relay.
If the engine has not had recent work done on it the timing should not be that far out to make it over heat.

I have a1998 chev. blazer. It had started running rough so I checked the oil and it was a milky colour . what is causes this?

If the oil in the engine has become yellow/white then you have probably got a headgasket problem. Look in the engines coolant expansion bottle. If you have an oil/water mix there too, it's a sure sign. hope this helps...

1997 blazer 4.3 has oil in the radiator now that i know my radiator has oil cooler .could the radiator be bad or a blown head gasket?

I would suspect a bad radiator BEFORE jumping the gun on the head gasket, have a leakdown test performed by a mechanic before you buy anything this will tell you if indeed it is the head gasket, don't take his word for it have him perform the test, then and only then will you know what the problem really is before spending big bucks.

No you don't need to change the head gaskets, unless you suspect that you have a blown or leaking head gasket.

My blazer has white smoke coming out of the engine I just replaced the thermostat and it has transmission problems what is wrong with it?

White smoke is water or coolant being burnt in the combustion process. It usually signifies a leaky head gasket or warped heads. A compression test will tell you for sure if this is the problem. This wouldn't affect your transmission, that would be something else. Hope this helps.

Starts hard when cold

Faulty idle control system/sensor, or intake gaskets leaking. If you've been using starting fluid on it, that would be why. Don't ever use starting fluid on a gas engine. If you're lucky enough to not blow your own head off, you aren't going to be lucky enough to cause extreme engine damage. ie: blown intake gaskets, bent valves etc.

Rought idle

There is a tester you can use that screws on the radiator cap and you can pump it up to see if it has a leak down effect in the system.. This wont tell you where its exactly going but tells you if there is a leak in the head or intake gasket.. probably should start with the intake and replace it and see if it does the trick .. if not then tear it down and replace the head gaskets and or check heads for cracks also.. thanks Jerry
