As they age timing chains will stretch to the point of slapping timing cover while staying static (in time). Also guides will wear allowing chain to slap. Replace chain and gaskets. Check BavAuto.com or Pelican Parts.com for best prices for BMW parts.

How to tell if the chain is loose

If you are talking about the "timing chain", the engine will not run smoothly. It will idle very rough if it even runs at all.I'm not sure what chain you are referring to.? It may also damage your engine. It's purpose is to direct the firing of the engines cylinders.

94 Merc Grand Marquis.... Runs rough from a cold start. Usually backfires a couple of times---feel it underneath me... then smooths out with acceleration. Seems like it's skipping at red lights and when...

Its sounding like it could have your timing off...either electrical, or internally. If all plugs have good spark, scratch electrical. Then you could be looking at a timing chain.

My 1998 bmw 740i is idling up then down several times before cutting off and it hesitates before cutting off when I try and drive it

Possibly MAF - (Mass airflow sensor). Check and clean sensor and connection clamps. Google it for location on your engine/vehicle model. Test: with the engine running, spray carb cleaner around it lightly. if engine smoothes out, then you located your problem. You can find them on ebay.

iac valve ( idle air control valve) its located on the throttle body, and timing belt, that year does not have a timing belt, good luck.

My 1990 nissan sentra has a noisy timing chain when running idle.

Your timing chain tensioner is using oil pressure to stay tight.Could be your oil pressure is so low at idle the tensioner just can't stay tight. At the next oil change you could go for a thicker oil and see if the tensioner keeps the chain tighter at idle.
