First check the fluid level on trans dipstick while engine is running,on flat ground and in 'park' a low reading may be the cause.I always like to change the fluid and filter when I have a transmission fault in the shop, but normally I wait until fault is located so as not to throw out the evidence(but I recommend to do). This type of fault is usually caused by dirty fluid in the trans not allowing valve body to function correctly, or a fault with the electronics, they being usually a speed sensor on the trans, or the throttle position sensor(tps)on the engine throttle body,It is better to have the vehicle engine and transmission computers(ecu)checked on a scan tool for any fault codes logged, this will save hours and $$.check around there are a huge number of scan tools out there for the home handyman(just ensure it does your car type),or check out the local garages,Prices can vary for this service, but it is quick and easy to have done. Prior to fault was there any work done on your car?I often get them in with plugs not reconnected or damaged by messy workmanship.A WORD OF WARNING! Do make sure that you have the correct trans type fluid for this model, most take an atf 3 type but some are cvt trans and they do not run on this fluid at all!trans codes should be on the vehicle ID badge.

Ignition lock cylinder

Many times a cylinder will not turn when the steering wheel lock has pressure against it from the steering wheel. Wiggle the steering wheel while trying to turn the cylinder. If this is not the issue, the cover surrounding the steering column will have to be removed to access the cylinder.

Why is my gear shift so hard to move??

I believe your clutch is not disengaging fully. When this happens it may be hard to get into first gear but subsequet shifts are easier due to the fact the vehicle is moving. You probably have a hydraulic clutch system which is low on fluid or may have air in the system. Before shifting into first gear or reverse try pumping the clutch pedal 5 or 6 times then shifting, if it goes into gear easier after this then you probably have air in the system, it can be bled similar to bleeding brakes. If this doesnt work you might be low on fluid, or have a bad master or slave cylinder.

Hard to shift gears from shifter. Can go to transmission and shift easily.

loose or mis adjusted shifter cable to your transmission. usually, they break. stretched shifter cable? possible. manual transmission? did not specify. automatic? suggest cable problem, loose cable at some point, look with 2 people to see where the cables jumping during the shifting process. manual? suugest a bad or going bad slave cylinder on the side of the transmission,or low fluid to the clutch master cylinder.is the clutch pedal weak? or just goes to floor and will not come back up? this is sign of leaking clutch master cylinder, bad clutch master cylinder. or both. see brake fluid on ground under the car after you pump the clutch several times? either a bad clutch master cylinder,on the firewall, drivers side, just under the windsheild,or a bad slave cylinder on the side on the transmission under the car on the transmission. suggest that you look for fluid leakage. follow the trail of fluid to the source.

Gear Shift very stiff, doesnt want to go into 1st gear or reverse

Continued operation like this and $100 would have been the cheap fix. If this is a hydraulic clutch, check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. Most take Dot 3 brake fluid and it will say on the cap. It is located on the fire wall near brake master cylinder
