Ignition key won t turn

The ignition key won't turn likely because the shifter linkage that locks the key in OFF is worn or loose. Move the shifter linkage hard to the Park position and the key will turn. Have the linkage adjusted and the worn parts replaced

I have a 1986 mercury grand marquis and when i turn the steering wheel or wiggle the steering wheel the car will die is this the ignition switch

Hello, This can be an Ignition switch if you have the Ignition on the steering column. If this happens only at "Idle" speeds then the problem may be that the engine is idling too slow. If at any speed, then disregard the idle as the problem.
There are several screws holding the plastic steering column cover on. They generally are in recessed holes in the bottom of the plastic cover. Some Ignition switches are more complicated to remove. There is a push hole for a spring in the lock cylinder which allows the core to come out.

You will need to disconnect and reconnect the battery several times because the Key core needs to be in the Acc or Run position for the core to line up to be removed.

This is not a difficult job for an Experienced person. You do have to mark the Key switch position to its mounting place. The connection lengths for the rod or cable running through the steering column is critical. This is why you try to match the switch position before tightening everything down.

You may also find that the mounting bollts have Security shapes on them requiring matching sockets to fit over them to turn them. They are available at Autoparts stores.

Key wont turn cant shift out of park

try wiggling the wheel side to side wheeel trying to turn the key, maybe the wheel is holding the ignition for turning otherwise the lock may be bad, most times the wheel puts pressure on the lock and this causes the ignition not to turn so try wigglinng the wheel while trying to turn the key key and see if that helps and if not then i would try another key and and if that still doesnt work then i would have to say theres a problem with the cylinder lock for the ignition, good day

How do I get the ignition cylinder out of steering colum in a 1986 merc grand marquis

On the colum where the ignition comes out there should be a little hole on the bottom. put a small wire in the hole and push in on the detent and turn you ignition to the off position and the tumbler set should slide out. You will need the key in the ignition for this to work

I am unable to turn the key in the ignition of my 87 Mercury Grand Marquis. The steering wheel is not locked. I think the tumblers are miss aligned. I bought a new Lock cylinder but can't get out the old...

Make sure the gear selector is fully in the park position. If it is not, you will not be able to turn the key to the position that locks the steering. This is by design, so that if someone has to turn the key off because of a runaway engine, they don't inadvertently lock the steering.

Key won't turn on ognition

If the key is stuck in your ignition, try turning your steering wheel hard in both directions while twisting your key gently in both directions. The steering wheel lock may be putting back pressure on your ignition switch causing it to bind and this in-turn stops you from being able to turn your key.

If you can slide your key in and out of your ignition, then your key may be worn and the cylinder cannot be twisted by the humps on the key...check to see if your key shows signs of shinny sides and deep marks. If this is the case you will have to have keys made for your car. It may be easy to do if you have T-Tops, you can take a top off and bring it to a lock smith. They can make a key to fit your ignition in about an hour and it should cost about $25-$35. I had to have that doen for my 1991 MR2. Hope this helps!
