Question about 1995 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

The car won't release out of park if there is any strain on the transmission, (eg, angled forward or backward) when parked on even a slight incline. What would cause this and what is the solution?

Sounds like your brake switch mounted on top of the brake pedal . remember you have to put your foot on the brake to shift out of park . there is a swith that releases the shift should be a 2 wires mounted on top of brake pedal under dash

Transmission won,t go out of park

Nearly all the new cars have a Park-Interlock System (with an Auto Transmission)
The Key is on - usually engine running
The Brake Pedal applied
Then shifter is Un-Locked
There could be a problem with the interlock system
Also be aware that if you have the vehicle parked on an incline - that can put the transmission linkage in a bind making it almost impossible to shift out of park. To prevent this last issue from happening - AWAYS apply the parking brake when parking on an incline. Let the parking brake support the weight of the vehicle - not the transmission park paw gear.

How do I tighten an automatic transmission in a 2002 3.85 Imala?

this is normal as there is clearance built into the parking pawl in the transmission to make it easier to go from park to a gear. I`m guessing this happens when you put the car in park on a slight incline. if you walk up to any car and push against it when its in park it will roll slightly until the clearance is taken up in the parking pawl, this is the clearance that you have.

Transmission sticks in Park

If you don't think it is a linkage or shift lock solenoid problem, its probably something going on with the park gear in the trans.
Does it make any difference if you set the parking brake first ?

Why won't my 96 buick go forward or backwards

Well i would first check trans fluid in park with motor running. If fluid is good in color i mean red or a little dark then i would then check if it rolls in park the reason for that is to see if you had a axle pop out. Now if it holds in park your axle is fine. Next is the possibility of a bad transmission you may have broken the pump. One way to confirm is to disconnect one of the cooler lines and see if there is fluid pressure now this is dangerous and messy so i would recommend a shop to do this.

Parking lever stuck in park

Sometimes this can occur when you are parked on an incline you didn't use the parking brake. It can also occur under certain conditions and vehicles when the steering wheel is locked in a particular position. Try turning the steering wheel a half turn and see if that helps. Otherwise, enlist some friends to push the car up the incline slightly (just take some of the weight off) and see if that works. If neither of these tricks work, you may have something more serious, such as broken linkage or even internal damage to the transmission.

Parked on a inclined driveway so I went 2 release da car from park into 2 reverse n the shift won't move at all please help me

Sounds to me like there is too much weight on the "park" gear. Have someone push the car forward a little bit, and do it gently, to release some of the pressure on the transmission, and it should shift from Park without a problem. I highly recommend if parking on an inclined driveway, or any hill, to use the parking brake if it is possible to do so. Good Luck

Cannot get it out of park

All that is wrong is that (if on a slope) the weight of the car is
resting on the parking pawl in the gearbox. Taking the weight off
the pawl will allow the car to come out of park (push the car
uphill few mm, even just rock it, that's all it needs

Or I also heard of jacking the rear of the car up and turning the
wheels that way

This could be due to a known problem with the linkage for
the parking pawl. Jaguar have issued a bulletin on the
problem which occurs with the S Type from 1999 to 2001. The
gear selector becomes stuck in park if the car rolls
forwards or backwards to rest on the pawl, and the linkage
bends very easily if you strain to release it. As a result
of this, there can be problems with the switch which allows
the car to be started so I suggest you investigate this.
It's not a cheap job to rectify I'm afraid!
