Question about Toyota 4Runner

Open Question

1996 Toyota 4 runner 3rz-fe 4 cylinder engine. In the reassembly of timing belt no2 it says to make sure the weights of balance shafts No1 and No2 are at the bottom. What is the procedure to do this. There is no explaination in the service manual. I also have no been able to find an explaination on the net. Other than Make sure the engine is at TDC, and the weights of the balance shafts 1 and 2 are on the bottom. Then align marks and reinstall.

SOURCE: timing engine

I had a 2.4 L engine in a caravan and replace the water pump that was controlled by the timing belt.
I was having the same problem, I called my bother in law to help. The crank shaft has to stay perfectly timing on the low end. The cam shaft marks are set exactly one half of a tooth apart. So when looking at it, The left side cam gear mark is a half a tooth higher then the right side. Then you have to try and slip on the belt . That is the easy part. When letting go of the timing belt tensioner the marks should line up perfectly across from each other. You have to take off the belt again and make sure you keep correct tension on the crank shaft so the mark is not moving when you are putting on the belt. There is a web site call Alldata.com. The web site cost a few dollars but it willl give you a detail instructions on how to time the engine with pictures to guide you. This is the same web site the pro's use.

I hope this has been helpful.

Oh, by the way you are lucky because the engine is not an interferrence type , so you can not damage the valves at least. Since you know the oil pump is out of time , check all the spark plugs again , they are probably oil soaked .

SOURCE: Rocker arm failure

Did the timing belt break at one time? Aside from the obvious of it sounding like your son did what mine did and tried to race the vehicle beyond it's abilities if the timing belt broken at one time it may have damaged the valves. If the valve impacts the cyclinder it is possible that it can damage the rocker and cam. When you pull the head off this time have the head re-worked and valves replaced. This should solve the problem.

SOURCE: 1997AudiA6Quatro2.8L-aligning cam and crankshaft for timing belt

You must find the cam lock bar and crank lock pin to do this job properly, otherwise you can bend some valves and that becomes expensive..the front crank damper has a mark to line up with a mark on the timing cover for #1 TDC, but the cam lock bar is what aligns the cams into position. The crank lock pin is helpful but not 100% necessary...

Balancing shafts reaon for them

on many V4 engines you need a balance shaft to make the engine smooth ,a V6 doesnt need them its to do with power balance so a 6 cyl has power all round the rotation of the crank a 4 or 3 cylinder hasnt hence a balance shaft ,some engines achieve this with a heavy flywheel others have a balance shaft inside the engine .So a lighter flywheel can be used for a faster acceleration as less weight to get into motion

2UZ-FE Engine
To remove the serpentine belt on the 2UZ-FE engine, position a suitable sized wrench or ratchet and socket over the belt tensioner bolt, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to release the belt tension, then remove the belt. The pulley bolt for the tensioner has a left-hand thread.
When installing the belt, make sure it fits properly in the ribbed grooves and check to be sure the belt has NOT slipped out of the groove on the bottom of the pulley.

Need Toyota radio security code

Oribeeboy is spot on for a 100 series Landcruiser - last 3 VIN numbers.
Let's say the last 3 VIN Nos were 264
Turn the ignition key so that the radio displays "SEC"
then: press "TUNE"and press No1 button on the radio at same time
then: press No1 button 2 times
then: press No2 button 6 times
then press No3 button 4 times
Finally hold the "SCAN" button to confirm the code. The radio will then turn itself off. You can then turn it on in the normal way.
(Hopefully!)
