Your timing belt is broken, it is NOT an interference engine so it did not damage pistons or valves, but the front of the engine will need to be taken apart to install a new timing belt.

what will happen , you will be in all sorts of bother
try this , remove the spark plugs then bring number 1 piston up on compression until the timing marks read tdc
remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor button is pointing to no 1 plug lead
directly under the center of the rotor button line , using a small triangular file and file a small nick in the edge of the distributor body if there is not already a mark there
remove all wires to the distributor . undo the single nut that holds the distributor clam to the block and lift the distributor out
note which way the rotor button turns as you will have to position it before the mark when reinstalling so that the rotor button ends back up at your mark on the body
points to remember--- no 1 piton has to be at tdc compression stroke and the rotor button has to be at your mark or existing mark to get it all right on assembly

put the engine on number 1 compression and check where the rotor button is in relation to mo one plug lead
it should be directly underneath it
remove the distributor and turn the rotor button one tooth so that when the distributor is fitted back in , the rotor button points to no 1 plug lead
from that point fit a timing light and start the engine turn the distributor until 12 degrees btdc comes up and lock the distributor at that point
from that point the ECM will adjust the timing as required

bring no1 piston to TDC firing on the timing mark on the balancer and line the rotor button point to under no1 plug lead and place the distributor in the block . As it goes in the rotor will turn out of position so lift up the distributor until you can reposition the rotor just forward of the position so that when the distributor is full in the rotor lines up with no1 plug lead. The movement is from the helix on the drive gears and you have to compensate for that when positioning the rotor button.. leave the retaining clamp just loose enough to turn the body of the distributor . After fitting all the leads in the correct firing order . start the engine and using a timing light move the distributor body until you get the timing mark on the required degrees advanced ( normally around 12 ) and then lock up the clamp.

I have a 1997 dodge avenger 2.5 V6 I pulled the distributor out to replace with a new one and did not mark the position of the rotor button...how do I make sure I have the new rotor button in the corr


You would have to find the number one spark plug Remove the wire and plug. Manually turn the motor over to the compression stroke. Insert the distributor so that the rotor generally faces the number one plug.

Usually, you only replace the Distributor Cap and Rotor, not the Distributor itself.

This means that the timing chain or belt is broken. The rotor should turn if cranking and if it doesn't somewhere between the distributor gear and the crankshaft is broken.

I would get the manual for this vehicle in order to go deeper into the subject.

How to remove distributor on a 1998 gmc pick up with 5.0 engine, do I have to mark anything or just take off bolt and pull out.


You need to mark in 2 places. With the cap off mark the position of the rotor button on the distributor housing first. Then you need to make a mark on the distributor housing that will line up with a mark on the engine itself.
When you put the distributor back in back the rotor button up before you put it in because the cam gear will turn it ahead as it seats. For example, if the rotor button is at 3 o'clock then back it up to 1 o;clock.
Don't force the distributor down at the end because you can damage the end that drives the oil pump. Fidle and wiggle it as you push and it should line up and drop onto the oil pump. Also DON'T turn the engine over while it's out or you will have to retime the engine. Hope this helps.

Remove cylinder # 1 spark plug, # 1 is the front one on drives side, turn crankshaft pulley to TDC on compression stroke, you'll feel the comperssion at cylinder #1 spark plug hole, follow cylinder # 1 spark plug wire to distributor cap, mark outer part of distributor where # 1 sits, remove distributor and restabe distributor with rotor at mark you made, then set timing.

I'm not familiar with your car, but the distributor rotor should turn whenever the engine is cranked, if not check to make sure the rotor screw isn't missing (if it has one, some are held in with a spline instead), try spinning the rotor by hand if the rotor turns but not the shaft the rotor is broken, if the shaft spins the drive gear pin is sheared or the cam gear is shot.
