These are notorious for this problem-a leaking intake gasket at #4-it can be verified by using a can of carb cleaner. Spray around #4 intake port, if the idle changes you have the same issue. Do NOT clean the throttle body on these cars, it is so sensitive that a 25 RPM change will set another code that you'll never get rid of unless you replace the entire throttle body. I work on my neighbor's Altima, there are no shortage of quirks with these cars. Here is a link specific to your issue, with owners who want a class action against Nissan:

Car sometimes jerks when idle and wont accelerate when this happens

crank sensors fail on these very frequently, causing running issues. if service engine soon light is on, then your mechanic should be able to pull something from computer. sounds to me like he doesn't know what he is doing. get your self a new mechanic. that light doesn't come on just for fun. it comes on to tell you that there is a problem. if a throttle body is an issue, he should have pulled P0507 ICS system. If so, there may be an issue with the throttle body. have seen few with computer issue causing throttle body code, but those are rare. most likely throttle body, but depend on code number.

2003 Altima shuts off while stopped at red light

If you have a Service Engine Soon light on, then having the computer scanned for codes would be recommended. The code could indicate what the problem may be. The most common is cam and crank sensors.

I would have it checked to verify.

Thanks Jay!

1998 nissan altima dashboard display engine service soon

Hello and thank you for using FixYa!

The service engine soon light comes on when a fault is detected in the emission system. The service engine soon light is the same thing as a check engine light. A scan tool will be needed to get the code for the failure, so the proper repairs can be made.

Thanks Jay!

MAINTENANCE REPAIR ON HIGH MILEAGE NISSAN ALTIMA

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with one of the components or sensors it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you need to diagnosed and repaired it. Some problems are minor, but if not addressed it could become major. The list of possible codes number in the hundreds. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, or what engine parameter is out of normal range. You or a technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint cause and the proper repair. Even if you reset the light, if the underlying problem is not addressed it will come back on.

Please let me know if this information is helpful. Positive feedback is appreciated. Thank You!

2003 Nissan Altima 2.5S, Check Engine Light Problem.

this problem could be caused by the mass air flow censor, i had the same problem with my car. it is really pricey at the dealer so you might want to check elsewhere for this part. I found one at a scrap yard for 85% less that the dealer and i also got life time warranty, the dealer does not offer any warranty on this part.
